Workday in my life as a research scientist 👩🏻💻
My days are pretty chill (for now) since I’m only working on one project!
I tidy my desk around ten minutes before work and prep breakfast and coffee. Then, at 9 am, I check my email, Slack, and notes from the previous day to remind myself what to keep working on.
Depending on how much I need to focus, I’ll have a show playing in the background or Lofi music.
My work laptop, iPad, and work journal go strong every day 🤭

Stepping into the world of a research scientist is often a blend of deep focus, problem-solving, and managing various digital tools. My typical day, while sometimes 'chill,' is packed with intricate tasks that keep my mind engaged. When I mention 'coding spatial analysis models,' it's truly the heart of my work. This involves writing and debugging code, often in environments like RStudio, to process and interpret vast datasets. It's like solving a complex puzzle, where each line of code brings me closer to understanding scientific phenomena. My work journal is an indispensable companion here; I'm constantly writing notes, jotting down hypotheses, observations, and potential solutions to coding challenges. Preparing my workspace is a ritual that truly helps me shift into work mode. You might see my desk looking a bit messy with a crochet project or personal items before I start. But by 8:53 am, it transforms into a tidy desk setup, with my laptop, iPad, headphones, water bottle, and even my glasses meticulously arranged. This clean desk setup isn't just for aesthetics; it truly helps clear my mind and signals to myself that it's time to focus. Having my essential tools like a reliable Muji pen for my journal and my trusty water bottle nearby ensures I stay hydrated and organized throughout the day. Working from home offers a unique kind of flexibility. While I aim for a structured day, there are moments, especially after intense data analysis sessions, where I might find myself working in bed. It's a comfortable change of scenery that helps me maintain focus without feeling tethered to one spot. And yes, having a show like 'New Amsterdam' playing on my iPad in the background is my secret for sustained concentration! It creates a gentle hum that somehow enhances my ability to dive deep into my research tasks. It's all about finding what personal rhythm works best for productivity. Breaks are just as crucial as focused work. I make sure to step away, grab some refreshing lychee snacks, or enjoy a proper meal. Recently, I indulged in some delicious asopao de pollo con tostones for lunch, a perfect hearty dish to refuel. These small moments help reset my mind and prevent burnout, ensuring I can tackle everything from responding to Slack messages to fine-tuning my spatial models with renewed energy. It's a continuous dance between focused work and mindful breaks, all essential for a productive research scientist's day.
