My irl Pokedex 🌱
I love using the app Seek to help me identify species of plants and animals! You can take or upload a photo, and it’ll identify it for you. Seek is by iNaturalist, and if you want, you can sync your account and keep a log or confirm the species you’ve identified.
It’s not always perfect, but you can get an idea of what species you’re looking at 🤍

As someone who absolutely loves exploring nature but sometimes feels a bit lost when it comes to identifying all the incredible species around me, discovering the Seek by iNaturalist app has been a game-changer. It truly feels like having my very own 'IRL Pokedex' right in my pocket, ready to make every outdoor adventure an educational quest! Getting started with the Seek app is incredibly straightforward. You just download it to your iPhone, and you're ready to go. The first thing you'll notice is the intuitive interface, starting with that calming green loading screen. Once it's open, the main menu immediately gives you options to start identifying, check your achievements, or dive into some fun challenges. It's designed to be user-friendly, even for beginners. My favorite feature, hands down, is the instant identification. You simply point your camera at a plant, insect, or animal, and the app uses its powerful recognition technology to suggest what it might be. It’s not always 100% accurate, but it gives you a fantastic starting point. I've used it countless times to figure out the names of wildflowers I've spotted, from a vibrant Pot Marigold to a delicate Common Hibiscus. It's so satisfying to learn new things on the fly! The 'My Observations' screen is where the magic of building your personal Pokedex truly happens. Every time you identify something, it gets logged here. It's a wonderful way to keep track of all your discoveries and see how much you've learned. Plus, the app incorporates gamification through its badges and challenges. These aren't just for show; they genuinely encourage you to explore different habitats, identify various species, and even contribute to citizen science. Earning a new badge for spotting a certain number of insects or identifying plants in a particular biome makes me want to go out and discover even more! For those moments when the app isn't quite sure, there are a few tricks I've learned. Taking multiple photos from different angles, ensuring good lighting, and getting a clear focus can significantly improve its accuracy. And if Seek can't pinpoint it, you can always upload it to the full iNaturalist platform (which Seek is powered by) for the wider community to help identify. It’s a fantastic way to connect with other nature enthusiasts. Honestly, whether you're a seasoned ecologist or just someone who enjoys a casual walk in the park, Seek by iNaturalist enhances the experience immensely. It turns every outdoor excursion into an engaging learning opportunity, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone wanting to deepen their connection with the natural world around them.
