Junk Journal Flip Through 📒
One month into my junk journal journey and I’m obsessed. It’s been so fun to get some photos off my camera roll and document some memories. I haven’t been journaling every single day but it’s been a great way to journal special moments or my favorite things. My journal is from @Michaelsstores and I also love to shop at Hobby Lobby for paper, stickers and washi tape! They have great sales throughout the month. Are you in the junk journal community? So, you've seen a mixed media art journal flip through and you're thinking, 'How do I even start?' I completely get it! When I first dipped my toes into junk journaling, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the amazing creations out there. But honestly, that's the beauty of it – there are no rules, and it’s all about expressing yourself and capturing moments in a unique way. A mixed media art journal is essentially a creative space where you combine different materials and techniques. Think beyond just writing; it's about collage, painting, drawing, stamping, stenciling, and incorporating all sorts of ephemera – bits of paper, fabric, tickets, dried leaves, whatever sparks joy! It's less about perfection and more about the process of exploring and documenting. This approach allows you to truly personalize your journal, making every page a reflection of your experiences and creativity. For beginners, you don't need a huge stash of expensive supplies. Your journal itself can be an old book, a simple spiral-bound notebook, or one from places like Michaels (where I found mine!). Beyond that, grab some glue stick, a pair of scissors, old book pages, magazine cutouts, maybe some acrylic paints (even a basic set will do!), a black pen, and some washi tape (Hobby Lobby is great for this!). Don't forget photos from your camera roll – they’re perfect for personalizing your pages and bringing your memories to life. One of my favorite simple mixed media techniques is layering. Start with a background layer of collaged papers – newspaper, old book pages, patterned paper scraps. Don't worry about it being perfect; embrace the imperfections! Then, add a light wash of paint or gesso to unify it and create a softer base. Once that's dry, you can begin adding focal points: a cherished photo, a meaningful quote, or a simple doodle. Don't be afraid to add texture with a bit of fabric, string, or even torn paper edges. It’s all about building up interesting layers that tell a story. When it comes to documenting memories, your journal becomes a beautiful way to recap special moments, feelings, or even just your favorite things from a particular day or week. Instead of just writing a straightforward entry, think about what visual elements can help tell that story. Did you visit a new coffee shop? Glue in the receipt and a napkin! See a beautiful flower on a walk? Doodle it or add a picture. This multi-sensory approach makes looking back so much richer and more engaging. I often use mine to 'recap' my week's highlights or a recent outing, adding photos and little notes to truly capture the essence of the moment. Feeling stuck with a blank page? My go-to trick is just to start gluing down random pieces of paper or laying down a messy wash of paint. It breaks the intimidation instantly and gives you a foundation to build upon. Remember, it's your journal, so experiment and enjoy the creative journey. There's no right or wrong way to do it. Connecting with other journalers online can also provide endless inspiration and a supportive community – don't hesitate to share your progress and ask questions!
