Sensory Bins for my Toddler Class 🫶🏼

Here are a few sensory bins I’ve made since coming back to work:

🤍 Straws + Hedgehog Fine Motor Toy (perfect for working on color recognition, counting, and of course fine motor skills)

🤍 Carrot Fill + Dump with Beans (works on hand-eye coordination, cause and effect, and early math concepts like empty vs. full)

🤍 Search + Find with Easter Grass & Eggs (focuses on object permanence, visual scanning with attention to detail, and imaginative play)

🤍 Egg Shape Puzzle with Foam Squares (perfect for shape recognition, early problem solving skills, and matching)

🤍 Fill a Bucket with Applesauce Lids + Pipe Cleaners (Works on fine motor control, counting and sorting, and open-ended creativity)

Would you believe me if I said the littles LOVE the random apple sauce lids the best??? 😂

I plan to rotate sensory bins monthly since they don’t play in them every day, only a couple times a week!

... Read moreSensory bins are fantastic tools that allow toddlers to explore and learn through hands-on experiences. From personal experience, incorporating everyday objects such as pipe cleaners, beans, and foam squares can create diverse textures and challenges for young learners. For example, using straws combined with a hedgehog fine motor toy encourages color recognition and counting, while also strengthening finger dexterity. Another great sensory bin activity involves mixing carrot-shaped fillers with beans, which promotes hand-eye coordination as toddlers scoop and dump, while helping them grasp early math concepts such as empty versus full. Incorporating seasonal elements like Easter grass and hidden eggs enhances visual scanning abilities and sparks imaginative play. One surprising winner among sensory bin fillers has been random applesauce lids combined with pipe cleaners. Kids seem captivated by these seemingly ordinary items, exploring sorting, counting, and even creating patterns. Rotating these bins every month keeps activities fresh and maintains children's interest, especially since toddlers benefit most from short, frequent sensory play sessions rather than extended continuous use. When designing sensory bins, it's important to consider safety by supervising play and avoiding small parts that could present choking hazards. Also, mixing open-ended elements allows toddlers to direct their own learning and creativity, making each playtime unique and developmentally beneficial. Overall, sensory bins provide a rich environment for toddlers to build foundational skills like problem-solving and fine motor control in an enjoyable way. Integrating these hands-on activities into classroom or home routines can significantly enhance early childhood development.
