This is the reason I will never get fake nails again…
backstory:
I work at a donut shop and I was closing this shift and doing my closing duties like normal. Getting the lids and spoons for the frosting, sweeping, and taking out the trash before I mop like I always do…
I then went into one of the bathrooms and bent down to get the tiny lid off and the lid of the trash can (mind you it’s the kind of lid that kind of swings when you push it open) got up under my natural nail but kind of the side of the fake nail and peeled it almost completely off as it starting to bleed and then I nearly passed out and started crying because it obviously hurt so much.
Thankfully there is an urgent care literally right next door so I clocked out and went over as they got me all checked in and got X-rays and then numbed me and took the natural nail and fake nail off all together!
Update:
It’s been almost a week and my cuticle is starting to grow back which is a very good sign :)
... Read moreIt's so easy to get drawn into the world of beautiful, long fake nails, isn't it? They look amazing on social media and can make us feel so glamorous. But after my recent horrific experience, which left my natural nail almost completely detached and my finger bleeding, I've had a lot of time to reflect. Many of us probably ask ourselves, 'should we just quit' fake nails, especially when an acrylic is lifting or our natural nails feel weak underneath. My story was a wake-up call that sometimes, the risks can outweigh the aesthetic appeal.
What happened to me, where a seemingly minor bump caused my fake nail to peel off from the side, taking my natural nail with it, was extreme. The sight of my injured finger, with blood at the base of the nail, was truly shocking. I ended up in a medical setting, needing X-rays to ensure no bone damage, and then having both the natural and fake nail removed. It put into perspective how easily these things can go wrong.
But even less dramatic incidents can be incredibly disruptive. Have you ever experienced greenie nails, which are fungal or bacterial infections under your fake nails? Or maybe you've had an acrylic lift, trapping moisture and becoming a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to a painful infection around the cuticle area. These issues are far more common than we realize and can significantly impact our nail health. When you see a bandaged finger on yourself, it really makes you think about future choices.
If you're asking yourself 'should we just quit,' consider the long-term health of your natural nails. Constant application and removal can thin them, making them brittle and prone to breakage. After my incident, my focus has been entirely on healing. Looking at my bandaged finger now, I'm just grateful for the progress in my recovery journey. My cuticle is slowly growing back, which is a good sign, but it's a long process to get my nails back to full strength.
For those contemplating giving up fake nails, there are so many wonderful alternatives that are kinder to your natural nails. Nail strengtheners and hardeners can work wonders. Gel overlays offer durability without the thickness and potential damage of acrylics. Or perhaps embracing your natural nails, focusing on regular manicures, cuticle care, and healthy habits like biotin supplements, could be the answer. Even just wearing clear polish can make your nails look polished and protected.
Ultimately, the decision to 'quit' any beauty routine is a personal one. My advice, based on my very painful experience, is to prioritize your health and well-being. If you've had recurring issues, pain, or like me, a truly traumatic injury, it might be time to listen to your body. My injured finger is a constant reminder that sometimes, less is truly more when it comes to self-care.
