Tips for surviving first week postpartum?
Had my unmedicated vaginal birth here last week and wanted to document the 48-hour stay since I was clueless pre-delivery!
Day 0 (Delivery Day):
1. 2hrs post-birth: Nurse removed catheter, helped me pee. Checked bleeding.
2. 5hrs post: IV removed, walked solo to bathroom. Baby got Hep B and Vit K shots.
3. Food: Hospital meals for moms are free. Dads pay $15/meal. Uber Eats allowed!
4. Checks: Nurses q3h for mom’s temp/BP and baby vitals. Shift changes q8h.
Day 1:
1. Lactation consultant brought Medela pump and lanolin, taught latching (LIFESAVER, ask ALL the questions!).
2. Pediatrician checked baby.
3. Baby hearing test and bloodwork.
Day 2 (Discharge):
1. Final LC visit and pediatrician jaundice check.
2. Tongue tie clipped by ENT before leaving.
3. Exit requirements: Car seat check! Nurse wheelchaired me out.
Surprises:
1. Stool softeners/ibuprofen offered q12h (took ‘em preventively!).
2. Zero issues breastfeeding!
3. Mills rents Medela pumps ($) and Tuesday LC Zoom Q&As.
Did anyone else’s nurses do aggressive fundal massages? Mine felt like reverse labor. How soon did your milk come in? I’m 4dpp and still colostrum-only.
