The Most Important

Why do autistic individuals repeat certain phrases, sounds, or scripts, and why is that communication worth honoring? 🧠💬

From echolalia to scripting to proxemics, these “repetitive” behaviors aren’t random, they’re meaningful.

In my new YouTube video, I break down how to recognize, honor, and respond to these communication styles with neurodiversity-affirming strategies that build connection and trust.

... Read moreYou know, when I first started learning about neurodiversity, one of the most eye-opening concepts for me was 'proxemics,' especially concerning autistic communication. Before, I might have just thought someone was 'too close' or 'too far away,' but now I understand it's a profound part of how many autistic individuals express themselves and navigate their world. It's truly one of the 'must knows about autistic communication' that can change everything! Proxemics, simply put, is the study of how we use space around us to communicate. For neurotypical people, there are often unspoken rules about personal space – how close is too close in a conversation, for example. But for autistic individuals, these 'rules' can be very different, and their use of space is often a deeply meaningful, albeit sometimes 'repetitive communication behavior.' I've observed so many instances where understanding proxemic body language has been key. For some, maintaining a larger personal bubble isn't about being aloof; it might be about managing sensory input, feeling overwhelmed by proximity, or simply having a different comfort zone. Conversely, some autistic individuals might feel more comfortable being closer than neurotypical norms suggest, perhaps as a way to feel connected or grounded. Think about it: if someone consistently sits in the same chair, or prefers to stand a certain distance from you during a conversation, that’s not random. It’s communication. It could be saying, 'This is my safe space,' or 'I need this distance to process what you're saying,' or even 'I feel connected to you in this way.' As the OCR mentioned, it’s part of understanding 'repetitive communication behaviors' like gestalt phrases or even repetitive motor movements, where the body's spatial arrangement plays a role. So, how can we honor this? First, observe without judgment. Notice patterns in how an autistic person uses space. Do they lean in when engaged? Do they step back when overstimulated? Second, respect their boundaries. If someone consistently moves away, give them more space. If they prefer to be close, and it's comfortable for both, allow it. Third, offer choices when possible. "Would you like to sit here or there?" can empower them to define their own comfortable space. It's about shifting our perspective from expecting compliance to understanding communication. Recognizing proxemics as a valid and important form of 'autistic communication' allows us to build trust and connection in a truly neurodiversity-affirming way. It's not about what we expect from their body language, but what their body language is trying to tell *us*. This understanding is crucial for anyone supporting autistic loved ones, whether in a therapeutic setting like speech therapy or just in everyday life. It might seem like a small detail, but in my experience, honoring proxemics can make a huge difference in fostering genuine connection and mutual respect.

The most important tip: give yourself a break!!
Life can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to forget our own needs. Take a moment to pause, rest, and reconnect with what brings you joy. Embrace those small escapes and prioritize your well-being, because you can’t give your best to the world if you don’t first care for yourself 💕
