That's exactly what happened with our new 'cat mansion.' While our black and orange furballs eventually loved their plush beds and multi-level playground, the initial reaction to the shipping box was pure gold. It got me thinking about how to truly make a new cat tree a success for our furry overlords. Investing in a multi-level cat mansion, like the one we got with its scratching posts, cozy enclosed spaces, and even a ramp and hanging toys, isn't just about spoiling them (though it definitely is!). It provides crucial benefits for their physical and mental well-being. Cats are natural climbers and observers. A tall cat tree offers them a secure vantage point, fulfilling their instinct to survey their territory, which can reduce stress and territorial conflicts, especially in multi-cat households. The integrated scratching posts are also vital for claw health and redirecting scratching away from your furniture. So, how do you ensure your cats actually use their new luxurious abode and don't just stick to the box? Here are a few tricks I've learned: Strategic Placement: Don't just plop it anywhere. Cats love windows! Place their cat mansion near a window so they can watch birds, squirrels, and the outside world. This makes the tree an entertainment hub. Also, consider placing it in a common area where they can observe family activities without feeling overwhelmed. Make it Smell Familiar: Cats are scent-driven. Rub a cloth that smells like them (or you) on the tree, or place their favorite blanket on one of the platforms. You can also use catnip spray or sprinkle some catnip on the scratching posts to entice them. Playtime is Key: Use wand toys or laser pointers to lead them up and down the different levels. Make it a game! Hide treats on various platforms to encourage exploration. Our orange and white cat, who was initially hesitant, loved chasing the laser pointer up the ramp. Comfort is Crucial: Our new 'cat mansion' came with plush grey beds, which were a huge hit. Ensure any sleeping spots are soft and inviting. Watching our black cat confidently perch on the highest level, or our "happy boy" (the orange and white one) napping in his cozy bed, makes all the effort worth it.
