Book Review
This is the second installment in the series, and I must say, it has truly captivated me. Hayden is navigating the challenges of adjusting to a new normal while also managing the complexities of her relationship with five men—two of whom are still struggling to open up. Additionally, she is striving to maintain her academic performance, while dealing with an advisor who has made her uncomfortable and an ex-roommate who seems overly fixated on her. Also now that the council found out about her others want her too.
Having read the second book in this series, I found the layered storytelling quite engaging and relatable, especially the protagonist Hayden's struggle to maintain her academic performance amid complicated personal relationships. Hayden’s dynamic with the five men adds an intriguing layer of emotional complexity that goes beyond typical romance narratives. I appreciated how the author doesn’t shy away from showcasing the difficulties of opening up and the real-life baggage that characters carry. What stood out for me was the way the story balances supernatural elements — such as the council's interest in Hayden—and grounded, everyday issues like strained trust and uncomfortable interactions, including with advisors and former roommates. This blend creates a rich tapestry that keeps readers invested. I noticed from the title referenced in the images, "Midnight of Ashes" by Tessa Hale, that the story also delves into themes of found families and the challenges faced by shifters, which adds an exciting fantasy dimension. The cliffhanger ending leaves readers eager for the next installment, perfectly complementing the dragons of Ember Hollow universe. Personally, the emotional authenticity combined with supernatural stakes made this series feel fresh and emotionally resonant. For those looking for a book that mixes fantasy, romance, and personal growth with a protagonist navigating complex relationships and external threats, this installment is definitely worth reading.
