And then there was the coup.

You can do that.
Let's say it's all true.
What about after the coup?

Is Thailand better yet?
.
If a coup is a magic potion,
If the tank is the solution,
If tearing up the Constitution is the answer,
Should Thailand have been a developed country for a long time?

Because this country is not missing a coup.
.
Since 1932, Thailand has been under a coup-induced government, revolutionary corps, or power structure that resulted from coups combined for more than 70 percent of the period.
.
70% is almost three quarters of Thai political history.
.
If coups are good, if coups run the country better than real democracy, if coups solve the country.
.
Thailand should be an economic power today. It should have a similar per capita income in developed countries. It should have a global education system. It should be Asia's innovation leader.
.
But what is the truth?
.
Thailand is also a developing country, a low-growth economy, trapped in middle income for decades, and hovering around the same political problems.
.
Because Thailand's problem may not be an election, but it may be that every time people start to choose their future, someone says,
.
"I'll choose instead."
.
And when the results are not as promised,
Find someone else to take responsibility for again
.
So the question isn't.
"Who broke until the coup?"
But is
Repeated coups
Build something better?

Because if the tank is the answer
Thailand would not be a developing country until today.

Bitter in taste, fragrant in substance
จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวและการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองไทย พบว่า รัฐประหารซ้ำซากไม่ได้ช่วยแก้ปัญหาพื้นฐานของประเทศเลย ตรงกันข้ามยิ่งสะท้อนปัญหาระบบการเมืองและโครงสร้างสังคมที่ลึกซึ้งกว่า พลังของประชาชนในการเลือกผู้นำโดยตรงกลับถูกจำกัดอย่างต่อเนื่องเมื่อเกิดการรัฐประหาร สิ่งหนึ่งที่เห็นได้ชัดคือ ประเทศที่ประสบความสำเร็จในระดับโลกมักมีความมั่นคงทางการเมืองและระบบประชาธิปไตยที่ทำงานได้ดี ซึ่งสร้างบรรยากาศของความเชื่อมั่นให้กับทั้งนักลงทุนและประชาชนทั่วไป แต่ไทยกลับวนเวียนอยู่กับการเมืองที่ไม่เสถียร มักถูกแทรกแซงโดยกลุ่มอำนาจที่มีอาวุธหรืออำนาจที่เหนือกว่ากฎหมาย นอกจากนี้ การรัฐประหารมักจะสัญญาว่าสิ่งที่ดีกว่านั้นจะเกิดขึ้น เช่น ความสงบสุข การปราบคอร์รัปชัน หรือการพัฒนาประเทศ แต่สุดท้ายก็ต้องเผชิญกับอุปสรรคเดิมๆ เช่น ความเหลื่อมล้ำทางรายได้ การเมืองที่ไม่โปร่งใส และปัญหาคอร์รัปชันที่ยังแก้ไม่ตก การทบทวนอดีตของประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปี 2475 ซึ่งมีเวลาภายใต้รัฐบาลที่มาจากรัฐประหารมากถึง 70% ของช่วงเวลาทั้งหมด ทำให้เห็นว่าแนวทางนี้ไม่สามารถเป็นคำตอบของการพัฒนาประเทศได้ ภารกิจสำคัญอยู่ที่การสร้างประชาธิปไตยที่เข้มแข็ง ให้ประชาชนได้มีส่วนร่วมและการมีระบบตรวจสอบถ่วงดุลที่มีประสิทธิภาพ สำหรับคนไทยที่รักประเทศ การเลือกสนับสนุนกระบวนการประชาธิปไตย การเคารพสิทธิมนุษยชน และความโปร่งใสในการบริหารราชการแผ่นดิน คือทางออกที่ยั่งยืนที่สุด ไม่ต้องพึ่งพาอำนาจทางกองทัพหรือการรัฐประหารซ้ำซากที่ไม่เคยแก้ปัญหาอะไรได้จริง ในแง่นี้ การศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ทางการเมืองไทยและเรียนรู้จากบทเรียนที่ผ่านมา จะช่วยให้เราเข้าใจว่าความก้าวหน้าของประเทศจำเป็นต้องเริ่มต้นที่ความเป็นธรรมและความร่วมมือของประชาชนทุกฝ่าย มิใช่การกลับไปใช้กำลังและอำนาจโดยไม่เคารพเสียงของประชาชน
