The Chinese EV can come, but don't let the Thai car base collapse.

In early 2025, Thaksin Shinawatra said of the entry of the Chinese EV that Thailand must balance its "new industry" with its decades-long production base, because if it is not handled well, it will not be able to do so.

"The ecosystem we built on cars will collapse."

Today, that warning is interesting again when Indonesia walks the game to pull Toyota and Supply Chain to invest more, while Toyota has not yet announced a relocation from Thailand, but it is clear that Thailand must remain competitive and focus on local content-supplier-base production in the country.

China came because Thailand needed new technology and investment, but China came in. Did the Thai industry grow up or be replaced?

The Thai government has started to focus more on local content because what Thailand needs to maintain is not just a car assembly plant, but a network of parts manufacturers, workers, engineers, technology and supply chains.

This is what "Thaksin" warned of from the beginning.

Open the door for the future, but don't tear down the house yourself to open the door for guests.

Because if one day the EV fills the road, but the Thai factory, the Thai Supplier and the Thai workers are all gone.

We may have got the car of the future, but we lost the "future of the Thai industry."
จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัว ทำให้ผมเห็นภาพชัดเจนว่าอุตสาหกรรมรถยนต์ของไทยมีความสำคัญอย่างมากต่อเศรษฐกิจและการจ้างงานในประเทศ การมาถึงของรถยนต์ไฟฟ้าจากจีนเป็นโอกาสใหม่แต่ก็เป็นความท้าทายใหญ่ หากเราไม่ระวังและจัดการไม่ได้ดี อุตสาหกรรมเดิมที่สร้างมาตั้งแต่ต้นคงจะได้รับผลกระทบอย่างหนัก ผมเคยเห็นกรณีในประเทศอื่นที่มีการนำเทคโนโลยีใหม่เข้ามากระทบต่อตลาดเดิม บางครั้งทำให้ผู้ผลิตและแรงงานท้องถิ่นถูกแทนที่หรือสูญหายไป สิ่งที่ไทยต้องทำตอนนี้คือการยกระดับซัพพลายเชนภายในประเทศให้เข้มแข็งขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการสนับสนุน Local Content, การพัฒนาแรงงานและวิศวกรท้องถิ่น รวมถึงการรักษาโครงสร้างพื้นฐานที่สำคัญในอุตสาหกรรมรถยนต์เดิมควบคู่ไปกับการเปิดรับเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่ ในแง่ของการลงทุนและนโยบายรัฐ หากเน้นแค่การรับเทคโนโลยีใหม่โดยไม่สนใจฐานการผลิตเดิม เราอาจเจอกับสถานการณ์ที่เหมือนเปิดประตูต้อนรับทุกอย่างเข้ามา แต่ลืมปกป้องบ้านตัวเอง สุดท้ายแทนที่จะเป็นประโยชน์ต่อเศรษฐกิจไทย เราอาจสูญเสียโอกาสและแรงงานในอุตสาหกรรมนี้ไปอย่างน่าเสียดาย ผมจึงเห็นด้วยกับคำเตือนของทักษิณ ชินวัตร ที่ชี้ให้เห็นถึงภาพรวมระบบนิเวศของอุตสาหกรรมรถยนต์ไทย การบริหารจัดการที่สมดุลและยั่งยืนเป็นสิ่งจำเป็น เพื่อให้รถยนต์ไฟฟ้าจากจีนเข้ามาเสริมศักยภาพตลาด ไม่ใช่มาทดแทนจนทำลายฐานการผลิตและซัพพลายเชนที่เรามีอยู่ สรุปได้ว่า นอกจากการรับเทคโนโลยีใหม่แล้ว การรักษา Local Content และเครือข่ายผู้ผลิต วิศวกร และแรงงานในประเทศเป็นเรื่องที่เราต้องเอาจริงเอาจัง และมาก่อน เพื่อให้อนาคตอุตสาหกรรมรถยนต์ไทยไม่เพียงแค่ได้รถยนต์รุ่นใหม่ๆ แต่ยังได้อนาคตที่มั่นคงสำหรับคนไทยด้วยเช่นกัน
