I've been doing a lot of soul-searching lately about what it truly means to have 'character,' and this quote really hit home for me. For years, I, like many others, probably misunderstood it. I used to think having character meant always being loud, always having the last word, or even being a bit intimidating to ensure my opinions were heard. I mistook fiery reactions for strength, believing that if I wasn't being explosive or fiercely defensive, I was somehow weak or easily pushed around. But as this insightful message I found (from FherGalvan, so profound!) states: 'Tener carácter déjame decirte que no es el ser explosivo, grosero o insultante y prepotente.' It really makes you pause and think, doesn't it? It's such a crucial distinction. Real character isn't about being explosive, rude, insulting, or arrogant. Those behaviors often stem from a place of insecurity or a lack of self-control, not genuine strength. True character, I'm slowly realizing, is about having the inner composure to navigate difficult conversations and situations with grace and respect. It’s about being able to stand firm in your beliefs and express your point calmly and persuasively, without needing to tear others down or resort to aggression. It's about 'poder tener el control de tu interior para poder dar un punto sin ser llegar a insultar a nadie' – controlling your inner self to make a point without insulting anyone. That's a game-changer for how I approach interactions now! I've been trying to put this into practice, and it’s not always easy, especially when I feel challenged or misunderstood. My immediate reaction sometimes is to get defensive or even snappy. But I've started pausing, taking a deep breath, and reminding myself of this definition. Instead of reacting impulsively, I try to respond thoughtfully. This shift has made a huge difference in my relationships, both personal and professional. People are more receptive when they feel respected, even during disagreements. Cultivating true character means developing emotional intelligence and empathy. It involves consciously choosing how to react, rather than letting emotions dictate our actions. It’s about building a solid foundation of integrity and self-awareness, so our strength comes from within, not from external displays of dominance. It's about understanding that true power lies in composure and thoughtful communication, not in being the loudest or most aggressive person in the room. If you're also on this journey of redefining and building your own character, I'd love to hear how you're doing it!
