Welcome to my Summer Backyard Garden
Here’s a snippet of what I've harvested from my garden this summer!
From flowers to peppers, a ton of yard long beans, honey nut squash, baby carrots, conichons, strawberries, basil, purple cabbage, herbs and lavender, this summer has been great!
Now, the bugs are a different story! l've had to deal
with cucumber beetles, Asian beetles, leaf footed bugs, squash bugs, stink bugs, and everything else you could possibly imagine. Organic gardening is not for the week.
Every day I'm outside fighting bugs on behalf of my plants!
I can't wait for fall gardening! Bugs be gone!!
Growing a summer backyard garden brings immense satisfaction, especially when you see the variety of fresh vegetables and herbs thriving under your care. From my experience, keeping a diverse set of plants like honey nut squash, purple cabbage, and aromatic herbs such as basil and lavender not only enriches the garden but also attracts beneficial insects that can help naturally control pests. However, organic gardening demands patience and vigilance. I've found that regular morning and evening inspections help catch pest infestations early. For instance, cucumber beetles and squash bugs can be discouraging, but using companion plants like marigolds or nasturtiums can deter some of these pests naturally. One tip I learned is to introduce natural predators like ladybugs to help manage aphids and other bugs, reducing the need for chemical interventions. Also, maintaining plant health through proper watering and soil nutrition strengthens their resilience against insects. Despite the challenges, the reward of harvesting fresh baby carrots, conichons, and sweet strawberries makes the effort worthwhile. Planning for fall gardening excites me as I prepare to implement even more strategies to keep bugs at bay and enjoy another fruitful season.
