Drove to a valley far away. From afar, I could hear the chanting of a female singer: clean, ethereal, and light. Yes, it was the very piece at the beginning of the film. For a moment, I was a bit dazed: could it be that I accidentally stepped into some lovely "Utopia"? The place isn't big, but it has everything! There's sunlight, forests, mountains, meadows, streams, and fairytale log cabins. There are camping sites, snacks, art exhibitions, concerts, second - hand markets, pizza shops, bonfires, roasted sweet potatoes and corn... There's the fairy - like singer who seems to have stepped out of a fairytale. There are people coming from all directions, mingling enthusiastically. I also unexpectedly met Sai, who came from afar. She's beautiful and dexterous, and when she smiles, she's like a fairy. She's a craftswoman who usually hides in the mountain villages of Doi Inthanon, devoting herself to making cloth and clothes (the most beautiful store in Bamboo Family Market is hers!). After greeting her, we quietly watched her dye the cloth and make clothes. We enthusiastically roasted sweet potatoes, and then had a hearty chat with the Japanese friends sitting next to us. In the mountains of Chiang Mai in winter, with a temperature of 20 degrees, there's wind, songs, and sunshine. Neither too cold nor too hot, unhurried. This is the calm and slow daily life of the valley residents. "You will be as free as the wind on the mountain."

Chiang Mai
2025/2/21 Edited to

... Read moreWow, reading back about my time in that hidden Chiang Mai valley still gives me goosebumps! It truly felt like stepping into another world, a place where the air itself hums with tranquility and creativity. If you’re anything like me, dreaming of an escape from the everyday hustle, then Chiang Mai, especially its less-traveled corners, holds so many incredible secrets waiting to be discovered. One of the things that made this experience so rich wasn't just the stunning scenery, but the incredible local interactions. Meeting Sai, the craftswoman from Doi Inthanon, was a highlight. It opened my eyes to the beautiful artistry hidden within these mountain villages. When you visit, do try to seek out local markets, not just for souvenirs, but to connect with artisans. You'll find unique textiles, handmade jewelry, and often, the stories behind them are even more captivating than the items themselves. These moments of genuine connection are what transform a trip into an unforgettable journey. And oh, the food! Chiang Mai is a foodie’s paradise, and beyond the main city, these smaller communities offer some truly authentic flavors. I remember trying some incredible local variations of noodle dishes, quite different from what you find in the city center. Imagine a hearty egghoodle soup, perhaps a local specialty, warming you up on a cool mountain evening. And the street food culture is vibrant; you'll find stalls offering everything from perfectly steamed dumplings bursting with flavor to savory Chachupork skewers, grilled to perfection. Don’t be afraid to try what the locals are eating – it’s often where you find the most delicious and memorable meals. These aren't just meals; they're an experience, a taste of the local culture. If you’re planning a trip, consider going during Chiang Mai’s winter months, roughly November to February. As the article mentioned, that 20-degree Celsius temperature is just perfect. It's warm enough for comfortable exploration during the day but cool enough at night for cozy bonfires and peaceful sleep without the oppressive humidity. The air feels crisp, and it’s ideal for hiking, exploring waterfalls, or simply relaxing outdoors. This season also often brings unique festivals and market events that add another layer of charm to your visit. To truly embrace the 'slow living' vibe, try to allocate more time than you think you need for certain areas. Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, pick a spot, settle in, and let the rhythm of the place wash over you. Spend an afternoon by a stream, read a book in a coffee shop, or just observe daily life. It’s in these unhurried moments that the magic of Chiang Mai truly reveals itself. Renting a scooter (if you're comfortable) can give you the freedom to discover your own hidden spots, just like I did with that fairytale valley. Just remember to drive safely! Pack light, bring a good camera, and most importantly, an open heart ready to embrace the unexpected wonders of this incredible part of Thailand.
