rating pain levels on my tattoos🩷
I’m absolutely obsessed with all my tattoos so far, and they all have such special meaning to me!! If i had the money or they weren’t so expensive, i’d be covered in tattoos by now😭
1. 1/10: this was my first tattoo, and i had NO idea what to expect. i have a pretty high pain tolerance and honestly this wasn’t bad at all and kinda tickled most of the time lol. such a special memory though and i love when ppl ask about it, so i can talk about my amazing mama!
2. 4/10: i got this the same day as the first, and let me tell you, the tattoo artists had me SO scared for this one😭 but honestly it made it way better to think it was gonna be really painful and then when he started, to be like oh wait, this isn’t as bad as i was thinking. definitely my most painful tattoo yet, but it kinda got tingly, numb, hot feeling after a couple minutes so not so bad. this one is in my mimi’s handwriting and she used to sing me this song all the time, so very very special to me.
3. 1/10: this one is my only impulsive tattoo, but i don’t regret it AT ALL. this one didn’t really hurt at all, it just made my foot jump and shake a little. the way i had to lay was honestly the most uncomfortable part of this tattoo lol. me and my friend very impulsively picked these out on pinterest and got them the same day, but it’s still meaningful to me. lily is one of my best friends and i love sharing something like this🫶
4. 2-3/10: this one hurt at the very bottom close to my elbow, but it really wasn’t too bad overall. this one also took the longest out of all my previous ones, so i think that’s why i rate it a little higher. but this one is so so special to me, it’s in memory of my sweet nanny. we always say that whenever we see a cardinal, it’s our nanny looking over us after we lost her earlier this year.
5. 1-4/10 my dad picked this idea out for the matching lock and key and i think it turned out so cute! it’s my first tattoo with shading, and honestly i was super nervous for the shading. however, the shading hurt way less than the outline for this one and the only part that really hurt was the part closest to my wrist bone/the bottom.
overall, i didn’t think any of them hurt too bad and i can’t wait to get more when i have the money🩷
Hey everyone! I loved sharing my personal tattoo pain ratings, and seeing as so many of you are curious about tattoo pain, I wanted to dive a little deeper into what else influences the experience. Getting inked is such a unique journey, and while my pain scale is just my experience, there are definitely some universal truths that can help you prepare for your own tattoo adventure, whether it's your first time or your tenth! Beyond Just Placement: What Truly Impacts Your Tattoo Pain? You might think pain is all about where you get it, but so many factors play a role! From my own tattoos – like my "hands holding flowers" piece or even the detailed "antique-style key" – I've learned that the artist's technique makes a huge difference. A light hand can feel totally different from a heavier one. Also, the length of your session is key. My longer pieces, even if they were on less sensitive spots, definitely tested my endurance more. Design complexity, like how much shading versus outline work (I found shading generally less painful for my key tattoo, for instance!), can also change the sensation. And don't forget your own well-being! Being well-rested, hydrated, and having eaten before your appointment can seriously impact your pain tolerance. Choosing Your Spot: A Deeper Look at Tattoo Placement Pain We talked about my ribcage (4/10!), wrist, ankle, and forearm, but let's expand. Generally, areas with more fat and muscle tend to hurt less, like the outer thigh or bicep. Bony areas or spots with thin skin, like the ribs, spine, top of the foot, elbow, or inner wrist (where my "antique-style key" was close to the bone and hurt more), are usually more sensitive. Queries like 'tattoo pain chart wrist' really highlight how specific people are about placement! If you're considering a smaller, intricate design like a 'wrist orchid tattoo small' or even a 'sun and moon on skateboard' piece on the ankle, remember that even small details on sensitive skin can pack a punch. First-Time Tattoo Tips: Navigating Your Ink Journey If you're a first-time tattoo seeker, welcome to the club! My first tattoo, the "hands holding flowers," was a 1/10 and set a great precedent. Here's what I wish I knew: Research, Research, Research: Find an artist whose style you love and whose portfolio shows clean work. Don't rush this! Communicate: Talk openly with your artist about your design ideas (like a "cardinal bird" or a "You are my sunshine!" script), placement, and any concerns you have. Prepare Your Body: Get a good night's sleep, eat a solid meal, and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before your session. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Breaks: If you need a moment, just say so. A good artist will understand. Aftercare is King: Follow your artist's aftercare instructions religiously. Proper healing prevents infections and keeps your tattoo looking vibrant. Does Tattoo Style or Size Affect the 'Ouch' Factor? Absolutely! While my article focused on specific pain ratings, the style and size can play a role. A 'cyberpunk tattoo' with lots of geometric lines and heavy blackwork might feel different from a delicate fine-line design. Smaller tattoos aren't always easier; a tiny, detailed piece in a sensitive area can still be intense because of the precision required. And for 'same day tattoo' options, remember that while convenient, larger or more complex designs might benefit from more planning. Ultimately, every tattoo is a personal journey. Embrace the process, prepare well, and enjoy the beautiful art you're getting! Happy inking! 🩷
