I’ve thrifted quite a bit and have learned through many mistakes. Here is a quick guide to help you thrift for a sustainable home!

1: Before you go——Make a plan! 📝💗

-Choose a color scheme of 5 or less colors or follow the current one of your home.

- Use Pinterest for Inspo and try to recreate a similar look. BUT, start small no need to overwhelm yourself.

-Take screen shots to use for reference or make a board on pintrest.

-Make a list of 5-10 items and look specifically for similar items!

~Also when I say items;be general, be similar. You can’t predict a thrift haul! 🫶🏻

2: While at the store——Stick to the plan!

-Pick items within your colors.

- Use your Inspiration!!!

-Don’t throw everything in your cart.

-Ask yourself why you want it.

TIPS:

-Look for patterns and texture.

-Look for items that need little to no refurbishing.

-Be prepared to search, it’s a walk not a sprint.

Happy thrifting!!🛒♥️🫶🏻

... Read moreIt's truly amazing what treasures you can unearth when you commit to thrifting for your home. Beyond the thrill of the hunt, choosing pre-loved items for your decor is one of the most impactful ways to embrace sustainable living. I've found that not only does it save money, but it also gives your home a unique character that mass-produced items just can't replicate. Each piece tells a story, and you become part of its journey! When I go thrifting for my 'sustainable interiors' project, I always keep an eye out for certain types of items that offer the best value and potential. Don't just limit yourself to small decorative pieces! Solid wood furniture, for instance, is often incredibly well-made and can be easily refreshed. I once found a gorgeous mid-century modern dresser that just needed a good cleaning and some new hardware – it’s now a focal point in my living room! Look for sturdy chairs, side tables, or even bookshelves. Even if the upholstery isn't perfect on a chair, the frame itself might be a gem waiting for a simple DIY cover or professional re-upholstery down the line. Beyond furniture, decorative accents are where you can really let your personality shine. I love collecting vintage vases in different shapes and colors – they make for stunning centerpieces or shelf decor. Artwork, even if it's not a famous piece, can add so much character. Sometimes, all it needs is a new frame to completely transform its look. Don't forget about textiles like unique throw blankets or embroidered pillows. A good wash and they can add warmth and texture to any space. Mirrors are another fantastic find; they can make a room feel larger and brighter, and a beautiful ornate frame from a thrift store adds instant elegance. The beauty of sustainable interiors isn't just in finding these items, but in the ripple effect it creates. By choosing secondhand, you're diverting items from landfills, reducing demand for new manufacturing (which often has a heavy environmental footprint), and supporting local economies if you're shopping at independent thrift stores. It's a win-win for your wallet and the planet. Integrating these thrifted finds into your existing decor can feel a bit like a puzzle, but that's part of the fun! I like to mix and match. For example, a vintage wooden table can look incredibly chic next to a modern sofa. The key is to find common elements – perhaps a color, a material, or a design era – that tie everything together. Use your Pinterest mood board not just for finding items, but also for seeing how different styles can coexist harmoniously. Don't be afraid to experiment! Move things around until they feel right. And while the initial guide suggests items needing 'little to no refurbishing,' sometimes a piece just needs a little love to truly shine. I'm not talking about major overhauls, but simple things like cleaning with a good wood cleaner for furniture, polishing metals, or giving a ceramic vase a thorough scrub. A fresh coat of neutral paint can completely update a tired wooden frame or small table. These small efforts can turn a diamond in the rough into a sparkling gem that perfectly fits your sustainable home vision. Remember, thrifting is a journey, not a destination. Some days you'll walk out empty-handed, and other days you'll find exactly what you didn't even know you needed. My best advice is to be patient, visit often, and always go with an open mind. Happy thrifting, fellow sustainable interior enthusiasts!

My boyfriend and I bought a fixer upper a few months ago . It has been a lot of work but definitely worth it once the house is complete. We’re slowly getting there ☺️
