🌟College Dorm Essentials🌟
Some of the things I brought with me for my first year in college in a dorm room!
Obviously a lot of these depend on where you go to college and what all you are and aren’t allowed to bring as well as what amenities are provided by the university!
🫧Laundry Bag~ this can easily double as a hamper and the straps make it super easy to carry down to the laundry room
🫧Brita Filter~ I do not trust college tap water… The Brita filter gives me peace of mind that I’m not drinking nasty water!
🫧Shower Caddy~ at least in my shower there was NOWHERE to store any shower supplies so this made it easy to carry my shower things to and from the shower!
🫧Hand-Held Vacuum~ the dorm floors get so dirty so easily and the handheld vacuum makes it so easy to get into those hard to reach places
🫧Space-Saving Hangers~ I brought SO MANY CLOTHES to college and these were my saving grace that allowed me to store all of them in my closet!
🫧Command Hooks & Strips~ I wasn’t allowed to nail anything in my wall and tape didn’t hold up very well and sometimes would peel off the paint so these made it super easy to hang all of my decor!
🫧Ottoman~ I personally didn’t have one but my roommate did and she loved it! It gave her some extra storage space and acted as a step ladder to help her easily get onto her raised bed
🫧Makeup Mirror~ if you’re in a double like I was, there’s only one sink and mirror in the room shared between the two of you so it’s not always an option to do your makeup there but I found that I love sitting at my desk and doing my makeup in my makeup mirror!
🫧Storage Bags~ these were a hugeee help when moving things both in and out of my dorm!
🫧Space Heater~ for my cold girlies, the winters get pretty cold here and the thermostat only goes works so much🥶
🫧Fan~ for my hot girlies, sleeping in a dorm in the early fall heat is AWFUL without a fan (also sometimes they decide to continue blasting the heat into the dorm in the spring🤢)
🫧Mattress Topper~ the mattresses provided are ANYTHING BUT comfy and if you’re not used to an uncomfortable mattress, your sleep is going to suffer. A good mattress pad can help with that
🫧Utility Tote Bag~ super useful for carrying groceries and other things into your dorm!
🫧Umbrella~ when it rains in college, it pours, and the worst thing EVER is being caught in the rain walking to class without an umbrella
🫧Comfy Slippers~ a nice pair of slippers to wear around the dorm is an absolute must on the cold floors. I wear mine ALWAYS!

Hey everyone! Building on my initial list of college dorm essentials, I wanted to dive deeper into some key areas and share more of my personal experiences to help you truly prepare for dorm life. Moving away from home is a big transition, and having the right items can make all the difference in making your small space feel like a comfortable home-away-from-home. Let's talk about some of those items that really proved their worth. For instance, my drawstring laundry bag wasn't just a hamper; it was a lifesaver for those treks to the laundry room. A pro tip: consider getting two – one for darks and one for lights – to make laundry day even quicker! And speaking of cleanliness, the Brita water filter pitcher was non-negotiable. Not only did it save me from questionable tap water, but it also encouraged me to drink more water daily, which is crucial for staying healthy during stressful study sessions. Some friends even opted for filtered water bottles, which is another great option if your dorm has a communal water dispenser. When it comes to organization and keeping things tidy, you can never have enough tricks up your sleeve. Those space-saving hangers were truly a game-changer for my overflowing closet. Another thing I found incredibly useful was a set of vacuum-seal storage bags for off-season clothes or extra bedding. They compress everything so much, freeing up precious drawer and closet space! And for quick cleanups, a small handheld vacuum is genius. Dorm floors get surprisingly dusty, and having something powerful yet portable for crumbs or dirt made a huge difference. For moving in and out, or even just bringing things back from breaks, zippered storage bags are surprisingly useful for keeping items organized and protected. For decorating, Command Hooks & Strips were my go-to. I used them for everything from hanging fairy lights to displaying photos, making my room feel more personalized without damaging the walls. If you’re looking for a cute way to add seating and storage, an upholstered ottoman is fantastic – it doubles as a step stool for those high beds and hides away clutter! Comfort is key, especially when you're adjusting to a new environment. A good quilted mattress topper literally transformed my dorm bed from a concrete slab into a cloud. Don't underestimate how vital a good night's sleep is for academic success and overall well-being. And depending on your dorm's climate control (which can be unpredictable!), a space heater for chilly nights and a standing fan for warm ones are absolute necessities. I learned quickly that being too hot or too cold can seriously impact your ability to focus or relax. Finally, let’s not forget personal care and little luxuries. A mesh shower caddy is a must, especially if you have shared bathrooms. Being able to grab all your toiletries in one go makes those morning rushes so much smoother. And for us makeup lovers, an LED makeup mirror was perfect. My roommate and I only had one sink, so having my own dedicated spot to get ready at my desk was ideal. It also helps with lighting in dim dorm rooms! Don't forget essentials like a utility tote bag for quick grocery runs or carrying books, a sturdy umbrella because college campuses often mean lots of walking in all weather, and fuzzy slippers to keep your feet cozy on those cold dorm floors. My biggest piece of advice? Talk to your future roommate about what they're bringing to avoid duplicates and save space. Also, check your university's rules on what's allowed. Packing smart, prioritizing comfort, and adding personal touches will make your dorm room feel like your own special sanctuary. Good luck with your college journey!
