... Read moreHey fellow volleyball players! We all know the drill: you’re mid-game, diving for a ball, and suddenly your hair is everywhere. It's not just annoying; it can genuinely affect your game! That's why finding the perfect game-day hairstyle is a total game-changer. Beyond just looking cute, these styles need to be secure, comfortable, and keep every strand out of your face. I’ve experimented with so many different looks, and I’m excited to share some of my go-to styles that actually hold up through every spike, serve, and block.
Let’s talk about some of the absolute MVPs of volleyball hair, starting with the Double Dutch Braids. These are a lifesaver! They lie flat against your head, meaning no bumps under your headband or hat, and they keep all those pesky flyaways tucked away. To get them super secure, start with slightly damp hair or use a little styling cream. Braid tightly, following the curve of your head, and secure the ends with small, strong hair ties. You can either leave them as two separate Dutch braids or gather them into a low ponytail or bun at the nape of your neck for extra security, which is perfect for those intense matches.
Next up, the classic Volleyball Player Bun. Forget those loose, messy buns for a second – for the court, we need something that stays put! A high, tight bun is fantastic for keeping hair completely off your neck and shoulders, especially if you have long hair. I like to start with a slicked-back high ponytail, twist the hair tightly, and then coil it into a bun, securing it with multiple hairpins and a strong hair elastic. For an even more secure option, try a braided bun: braid your ponytail first, then coil the braid into a bun. This adds an extra layer of hold. Low braided buns can also be super effective if you prefer less tension on your scalp.
And what about the popular Two Braids into a Ponytail? This style is a personal favorite because it combines the neatness of braids with the practicality of a ponytail. You start by creating two French or Dutch braids on either side of your head, running from your temples back. Once you reach the crown or slightly below, gather both braids and the rest of your hair into a single, high or mid-level ponytail. This works wonders for keeping the front sections of your hair smooth and out of your eyes while allowing the length to still move freely in a ponytail. I find it much more secure than just a regular ponytail!
Beyond these staples, don't forget options like Bubble Braids! They’re surprisingly secure and look super fun. Just gather your hair into a ponytail and then add elastics every few inches down the length, gently puffing out each section to create the 'bubble' effect. Pull-through braid ponytails are another fantastic and secure alternative to traditional braids, offering a lot of volume and staying power. For those wanting ultimate scalp coverage and security, cornrow-style braids leading into a ponytail or bun are incredibly effective. Even simple but tight braided pigtails can be game-ready if secured well at the ends.
No matter which style you choose, always finish with a good strong hold hairspray to tame any lingering flyaways. And remember, practice makes perfect! Try these styles out during practice first to see what feels most comfortable and secure for you. Happy spiking!
