5 Retinol Mistakes Beginners Make

Thinking about adding retinol to your skincare routine? Here are 5 common retinol mistakes beginners make and how to avoid them👇

1️⃣ Using retinol every night right away — start with 1-2 nights per week and gradually increase as your skin adjusts.

2️⃣ Skipping moisturizer — keeping your skin hydrated can help reduce dryness and irritation.

3️⃣ Using too much product — a pea-sized amount is all you need for your entire face.

4️⃣ Mixing it with too many actives — be careful when combining retinol with exfoliating acids or other strong treatments.

5️⃣ Forgetting SPF the next morning — sunscreen is a must since retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Retinol can be an amazing addition to your routine when used correctly. Start slow, stay consistent, and be patient with the process! ✨

... Read moreWhen I first started using retinol, I made several of these typical mistakes, so I can definitely relate to how tricky it is to get the timing and products right. One key insight I gained was that patience truly pays off; beginning with 1-2 nights per week allowed my skin to adjust without excessive irritation. Also, moisturizing became a game changer. I started using a gentle, hydrating moisturizer right after applying my retinol serum, which helped minimize the dryness and flakiness I initially experienced. Another thing I found useful was sticking to a pea-sized amount of product. Using more than this didn't speed up results but instead caused irritation. I also learned to avoid layering retinol with exfoliating acids or other strong active ingredients in the same routine, as this overwhelmed my skin barrier. Most importantly, I never skipped sunscreen the next morning. Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays, so applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily protected my skin and prevented sun damage. In my experience, the Dr Joe Dispenza BLACKBERRY RETINOL GLOW SERUM was effective but gentle enough for beginners when used correctly. The visual reminders about these mistakes, like not using too much product or skipping moisturizer, really helped me stay consistent and mindful. Ultimately, embracing a slow and steady approach, combined with sun protection, has transformed my skin's texture and glow without discomfort or setbacks. If you're new to retinol, remember: less is more at first, and hydration plus sunscreen are essential for success.
