The Niagara Falls of The North!!✨🌊

Kakabeka Falls is located in Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park about 20 miles west of Thunder Bay.

This waterfall is often referred to as the Niagara Falls of the North, since it is the 2nd largest waterfall in Ontario, coming after Niagara Falls.

Watch as the water flows down a massive 130 feet into the Kaministiquia River !

Viewing this waterfall is easily accessible from the parking lot. No long hike required, so it is definitely a must-see on your trip to Ontario or around Lake Superior !

Nestled just a short drive from Thunder Bay, Ontario, it’s an easily accessible natural wonder that left me completely awestruck. Stepping onto the wooden observation deck, the sheer power of the water immediately grabs your attention. You can feel the mist on your face and hear the thunderous roar as the Kaministiquia River plunges a dramatic 130 feet over dark, layered rock formations. It’s breathtaking to watch the water carve its way through the gorge below, a sight that truly puts nature's force into perspective. What I loved most is that, unlike some other major falls, you don't need a grueling hike to witness this spectacle; the views are fantastic right from the parking area. This accessibility makes it perfect for all ages and mobility levels, ensuring everyone can enjoy its grandeur. Kakabeka Falls holds the impressive title of being the second-largest waterfall in Ontario, a fact that solidifies its nickname as the 'Niagara of the North' right after the mighty Niagara Falls itself. Its unique geological character, with ancient bedrock telling stories millions of years old, creates a distinctive landscape that’s truly captivating. It’s a fantastic spot for a picnic, too, with plenty of scenic viewpoints to relax and soak it all in. For anyone near Thunder Bay or planning a drive through Canada, making a stop at Kakabeka Falls is an absolute must. It offers all the grandeur of a major waterfall without the overwhelming crowds you might find elsewhere. This "Niagara of the North" provides an easy and rewarding adventure that will leave you with lasting memories. I can't recommend it enough – it’s truly a gem of Canada and a highlight of any Ontario exploration!
