My 5-9 as an Engineering Intern

One of the biggest myths I used to believe was that working in engineering meant long, sleepless nights and zero free time. But the reality? Engineering has one of the best work-life balances in the STEM world — and I’m living proof. 👩🏽‍🔬✨

Compared to other STEM paths like medicine or tech, many engineering roles — especially in industry — offer structured schedules, generous PTO, and predictable hours. I’m not saying it’s always easy (because let’s be real, deadlines and plant turnarounds exist 😅), but I still have time to work on my content, volunteer, take care of myself, and be present in my personal life.

From flexible hybrid options to 9/80 schedules (yes, you can get every other Friday off 👏🏽), engineering empowers you to work smart and live fully. I know so many engineers who travel, raise families, pursue passion projects, and even go back to school — all while excelling in their careers.

So if you’re passionate about STEM but don’t want to sacrifice balance, chemical, mechanical, electrical — honestly any branch of engineering — might be the perfect fit. Don’t sleep on it. 💻🔧📊

... Read moreIt's incredible how many aspiring engineers fear they'll be sacrificing their entire personal life for their career. But having navigated my own engineering internship, I want to emphasize again: a fulfilling 5-9 is absolutely achievable! My experience has shown that engineering isn't just about problem-solving during work hours; it's also about having the freedom to pursue passions, hobbies, and personal growth once the workday ends. Many people wonder, 'do engineers have work life balance?' or 'do engineers have good work life balance?' My answer is a resounding yes, and often, it's better than perceived! A huge part of this comes from the diverse nature of the field. For instance, some companies adopt cutting-edge engineering development methodologies that prioritize sustainable workloads over endless sprints, fostering an environment where innovation thrives without burning out the team. This kind of thoughtful approach makes a massive difference, ensuring you're productive, not just busy. Exploring various engineering paths can also reveal unexpected opportunities for balance. Take, for example, the world of industrial stormwater pollution prevention plans. This niche within environmental engineering, while critical, often involves structured project cycles and regulatory deadlines that, once planned for, allow for predictable work hours. It’s not always the frantic pace you might imagine. This diversity means you can find a role that aligns not just with your technical interests but also with your desired lifestyle. For those of you looking into internships, like perhaps a Tesla internship (which often gets a lot of buzz on platforms like Reddit), it's crucial to research beyond the company name. Look for insights into their team culture, project management styles, and how they support their interns' well-being. A great internship isn't just about gaining experience; it's about finding a place where you can learn and grow without sacrificing your 5-9 life. Don't be afraid to ask about typical work hours, mentorship programs, and company social events during interviews. And speaking of support, don't overlook the many resources available to engineering students. Scholarships, for instance, can significantly ease financial burdens, allowing you to focus more on your studies and personal life rather than juggling multiple part-time jobs. Checking your Siemens scholarship status or applying for similar programs can be a game-changer for maintaining that crucial balance during your academic journey. Even in highly specialized fields, like being a pipe network software founder or developer for a company like Unilever, the ability to structure your work and manage your time effectively becomes a skill that you cultivate throughout your engineering career. With the right strategies and a bit of research, your engineering journey can truly offer the best of both worlds.
