The side of HBCUs no one talks about

As a proud alumna of The Prairie View A&M University 💜💛 (go panthers). I want to highlight the importance of HBCU’s as back to school season draws near.

📖HBCU’s are equally as challenging as PWI’s📚

- As a transfer that came from a pwi, I can truthfully say that yes we learn the same material as other colleges. All accredited engineering schools are required by law to teach the same courses in similar depth. My time at PVAMU has definitely pushed me to be the best student that I can be, while also teaching me to seek out the proper resources.

🫱🏾‍🫲🏿 Alumni Network

- If at any point in time you run into alumni working your field/ major they will do anything they can to help you on your journey. Plus a lot of alumni come back for career day to potentially hire you! Our name carries weight because we have a very deep and rich history.

💰Scholarships

- In my experience I received wayyy more money for school at PVAMU then I did at the University of Houston. HBCU’s reward those with high academic achievement especially within STEM fields.

The choice is definitely not easy, but I’m glad I went to my HBCU, think twice before deciding where you want to go!

Many alumni actively engage in mentorship and recruitment, returning to their institutions to connect with students on career days. This sense of community not only enhances students' academic journeys but also aids them in their professional endeavors. In a challenging job market, having the support of a strong alumni network can make a significant difference in career outcomes. As back-to-school season approaches, it’s essential to consider the unique benefits that HBCUs provide. They are places where students are encouraged to push their limits, seek help when needed, and take ownership of their education. Choosing to attend an HBCU is not just about the education received, but also about becoming part of a rich legacy rooted in community and excellence. Think carefully about your choice—HBCUs have a wealth of opportunities to offer.
