Got a whole A and B case of MREs!
So happy to have found some at my local Joblot!
Rating: 7/10
Best items: Cheese Spread, Apple Cinnamon first strike bar
Worst item: Fruit Punch
Trying out a full A and B case of military Meal Ready-to-Eat (MRE) rations was quite the experience. These rations, originally designed for soldiers, are packed with a variety of components to provide balanced nutrition and energy in the field. Unpacking each item gives you a unique glimpse into how these meals are engineered for both sustenance and convenience. One aspect I appreciated was the diversity in flavors and textures. The Cheese Spread stood out as a surprisingly tasty and creamy addition, great for pairing with the included tortillas. The Apple Cinnamon First Strike Bar provided a nice, energizing boost with a pleasant fruity sweetness and good density to keep hunger at bay. On the other hand, some items like the Fruit Punch beverage powder were a bit too artificial in taste for my liking, which is a common critique among many trying these rations for the first time. Nutrition-wise, MREs aim to be very balanced. For example, the included Teriyaki Beef Stick offers a blend of protein with some sweetness and seasoning from ingredients like brown sugar and soy sauce, designed to satisfy both taste and dietary needs. Similarly, components like the Barbecue Toasted Corn Kernels deliver a mix of fats and carbs for energy, with a touch of salt and seasoning for flavor. From my experience, these rations are great for camping, emergency preparedness, and situations where conventional cooking isn't feasible. They are lightweight, easy to store, and provide consistent nutrition. However, it's always good to try a variety first, as some items might not suit everyone's palate. If you're considering stocking up or testing military MREs, start by sampling smaller packs to find your favorite selections within the wide range available. Remember to check for expiration dates, as even though MREs are shelf-stable for years, freshness can impact taste. Overall, with a rating of 7/10, these cases are a fine mix of practicality and flavor, with a few standout treats to enjoy.
