Weatherproof and Sealing

You know, one of the most common questions I get asked about my handmade leather goods is, 'Is leather truly waterproof?' And the honest answer is, not really! While leather is naturally water-resistant to a degree, especially full-grain leather, it's definitely not waterproof on its own. That's why adding a protective finish is such a crucial step, especially for items you want to last for years. I've learned through countless projects that investing a little time in sealing your leather makes a huge difference. Without it, exposure to moisture can lead to stains, cracking, and even mold over time. Imagine all that hard work going to waste! That's why, after all the cutting, stitching, and shaping, applying that final protective coat is one of my favorite parts of the process. It's like giving your leather creation a superhero shield against the elements. When it comes to choosing a sealant, there are many options out there, but I personally lean towards a NEUTRAL PROTECTIVE ACRYLIC FINISH. These types of finishes create a clear, durable barrier that not only helps repel water but also protects against scuffs and UV damage. They don't change the color of the leather, which is perfect for maintaining the natural beauty of the hide. Some people use waxes or oils, but for a truly robust, long-lasting seal that can handle daily wear, an acrylic finish has been my go-to. So, how do I apply it? It's pretty straightforward, but technique matters! First, make sure your leather item is completely clean and dry. Any dust or debris will get sealed in, and you don't want that. I usually apply the finish with a soft dauber or a lint-free cloth, working in thin, even coats. The key is to avoid puddles or thick spots, as these can dry unevenly and look streaky. I typically apply two or three thin coats, allowing each one to dry completely in between – usually about an hour or two, depending on humidity. You'll notice the leather developing a subtle sheen and feeling much smoother to the touch. For specific items like a leather jacket, the process is similar, but you might want to pay extra attention to seams, as these are often vulnerable spots. Always test a small, inconspicuous area first, just to make sure you like the finish and how it interacts with your particular leather. Once sealed, your leather goods will be much more resilient to rain, spills, and general wear and tear, extending their lifespan significantly. Remember, even with a sealant, it's still good practice to wipe off excess moisture promptly and reapply the finish periodically, especially on items that see a lot of use.
