Tried out a new Japanese spot in Sawtelle!! Very highly reviewed but if you’re craving Japanese curry, you’d probably be more satisfied hitting up Coco Ichibanya across the street 🫣 the curry at Menya Tigre was just a bit too brothy for my taste preference

Read moreAs someone who loves exploring authentic Japanese cuisine in Los Angeles, I recently visited Menya Tigre in Sawtelle and found its atmosphere very inviting, especially with its cozy indoor-outdoor seating area. The menu features an interesting mix that goes beyond just ramen, including hearty katsu curry rice, creamy curry tsukemen, and popular items like takoyaki and shishito peppers. While the curry here is noted for being lighter and a bit more brothy than traditional Japanese curry—something I personally found different from what I usually crave—I appreciated the variety it adds to the local food scene. The rich curry tsukemen, in particular, offers a unique dipping experience with noodles that have a good chew, paired with a flavorful broth. The balance of flavors is subtle and may appeal to those preferring a less heavy curry. For fans of katsu curry, the rice bowls here are generously portioned and quite satisfying. The appetizer options, including fried garlic and crab rods, elevate the meal and complement the main dishes well. One tip for fellow foodies is to consider your curry preferences when choosing between Menya Tigre and nearby spots like Coco Ichibanya, which is famous for its thicker, creamier curry that many find more comforting if you want that classic rich flavor. Overall, Menya Tigre offers a pleasant dining experience in Sawtelle, blending traditional Japanese flavors with a modern twist. It's a great place to try something slightly different in Japanese curry and ramen styles and enjoy the vibrant food culture of LA. Definitely worth a visit if you’re exploring new Japanese restaurants in the area.
