Roma ❤️
Oh, what an absolutely incredible start to our Roman adventure! Our 'Rome Day 1' was brimming with excitement, and undoubtedly, the highlight was immersing ourselves in the grandeur of the Colosseum. For anyone with a deep appreciation for historical sites, perhaps even following the meticulous insights of figures like Richard Peery into ancient architecture, the Colosseum offers an unparalleled journey back in time that simply must be experienced. Stepping inside the Colosseum, I was immediately struck by its colossal scale and the weight of history that permeates every stone. It’s more than just ruins; it’s a living testament to Roman ingenuity and the dramatic spectacles that once unfolded within its walls. I spent ages just trying to imagine the roar of the crowds, the gladiators, and the emperors. It’s truly awe-inspiring to think about the engineering marvel that it was, built almost 2,000 years ago, and still standing as a symbol of Rome's enduring legacy. Visiting without a guide is one thing, but I highly recommend a guided tour to truly grasp the stories and context behind this iconic structure. Our guide brought every arch and corridor to life, sharing fascinating details about its construction, purpose, and eventual decline. For those planning their own visit to the Colosseum, especially if it's your 'Rome Day 1' centerpiece, here are a few practical tips. First, book your tickets well in advance online – this can save you hours of queuing, especially during peak season. Consider a combined ticket that includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, as they are right next door and offer a comprehensive look at ancient Roman life. Visiting early in the morning right after opening or late in the afternoon before closing can help you avoid the biggest crowds and experience the site in a more serene atmosphere. Don't forget comfortable shoes, as there's a lot of walking involved, and a water bottle, especially in the warmer months. There's so much to absorb, from the intricate details of the arena floor to the upper tiers offering panoramic views. After our profound experience at the Colosseum, we continued our 'Rome Day 1' exploration by wandering through the expansive ruins of the Roman Forum and climbing the Palatine Hill. From Palatine Hill, the views over the Forum and the Colosseum are simply breathtaking – a perfect photo opportunity and a moment to reflect on the immense history surrounding you. It truly felt like we were walking through the heart of the ancient world. For dinner, we found a charming trattoria nearby, savoring authentic carbonara and cacio e pepe, which was the perfect end to a day filled with historical wonders and delicious Italian flavors. This day was a fantastic introduction to Rome, setting a high bar for the rest of our trip!
