What We Ate In Sabah, Malaysia 🇲🇾😋

🍜 𝗞𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗶 𝗞𝗼𝗽𝗶 𝗝𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗴

📍 Lot 1-0, Lintas Plaza, Lorong 3, Lintas Plaza Ring Road, 88300, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Highly-raved Sabah-style Sang Nyuk Mee - noodles were tossed in a black sauce & oil with fragrant lardy broth. Liver pieces were tender & slightly gamey. We also tried their signature stuffed eggplant that’s centered with juicy minced meat. Overall a solid meal!

📍 Mesilau, Kundasang, Sabah

Freshly produced from the farm’s local cows, we tried their chocolate & banana milk that was pretty standard, but the gelato was light & refreshing - a nice treat after exploring chilly Kundasang.

📍 Kg. Cinta Mata, Jalan Kundasang Kauluan, 89308

Another local favourite - we tried linopot which is a traditional Sabahan dish that’s served in wrapped leaves, earthy purple rice & savory side dishes. We got the deer meat + spicy coconut gravy that had just the right kick, as well as the Ayam Panggang (grilled chicken), which did not disappoint & balanced perfectly with everything else. Our tour guide also recommended the chicken wings which were very well-marinated & charred just right.

🐟 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁

📍 Lorong Hilltop, Taman Far East, 88300 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

A generous hearty bowl of Tom Yum Fish Soup - the fish was fresh, firm & combined perfectly with the thicker broth that’s rich & spicy. A must-try for tom yum lovers!

🍵 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲

📍 Unit B1-05, Block B, Sutera Avenue, 88100 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

We had to get our matcha fix & we found this gem! We had the smooth & creamy Kiku/Matsu matcha, as well as the Hana/Hakuun matcha which was richer & more full-bodied. The Pistachio Basque Cheesecake was so creamy & satisfying - easily one of the best we had.

Read moreWhile the article highlights must-try dishes in Sabah's popular eateries, many travelers are eager to know about other hidden gems and the best spots for authentic local noodles such as those found at face to face noodle houses in Kota Kinabalu. From my personal experience, these noodle houses offer a unique blend of textures and flavors, often with homemade noodles and rich broths that complement fresh, local ingredients. When visiting, don't miss trying the classic '面对白面' style noodles, which boast a perfect balance of seasoned broth and tender meats. Additionally, exploring the local markets in Kota Kinabalu can introduce you to a variety of street foods that offer a more budget-friendly yet equally authentic taste of Sabah cuisine. Vendors often sell freshly made snacks and sweets that provide an excellent contrast to the heavier meals found in restaurants. To enhance your culinary journey, consider pairing these noodle dishes with local beverages or desserts like the matcha treats found at Sutera Avenue, as mentioned. This combination provides a pleasing balance between savory and sweet, traditional and modern influences, capturing the essence of Sabah's diverse food culture.
