NYC’s Highly-Rated Lebanese Food✨

📍 Au Za’atar - Midtown East

So, my friend and I decided to check out this legendary Lebanese spot we kept seeing on Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book). Everyone raves about it, so we were super excited for our Thursday night dinner after hearing it’s so good! We arrived at 6:30 PM—rushing in a bit—and I made sure to order the Vegetarian Mezze Platter (a popular recommendation), thinking I was making all the right moves.

The server complimented me on the choice, and I was feeling pretty smug about my research. We also got the Mixed Grill Platter to round things off.

When the platter came, I was so eager to dive in, but… something was off. Everything tasted super sour. I mean, like really sour! 😩

• The meze platters (various dips) were all really tangy, and the cauliflower made me tear up—it was just so sharp. My friend tried it and actually had the cauliflower bounce out of her mouth from the sourness (her reflex 😂).

• Everything—eggplant dips, bean dips, all of them—had this acidity. Even the three types of sauce on the side were all acidic.

The Pita bread was great when it was hot, and the Grilled Meat Platter came out next (thankfully not sour). It was decent, but the flavor profile was a bit standard, with a light spice. The fries were also strangely sour (I couldn’t finish them 🙃).

The grilled chicken was juicy, which I liked, but overall, it felt like halal cart food (I’m sorry).

After reflecting on the experience, I revisited the recommendations, and only one person mentioned the sour cauliflower—but I didn’t expect the whole meal to be that sour!

Honestly, the best part of the meal was their ice cream (surprisingly good). But after spending over $200 for two people, I left feeling kind of disappointed and confused about what went wrong. 😅

Maybe it was the dishes we picked, but be warned—if you’re not into sour flavors, this might not be for you!

... Read moreNavigating the vibrant Lebanese food scene in NYC can be an exciting journey, but as I've learned, not every experience hits the same note! After my recent adventure, I wanted to share some insights on what to expect and how to find your perfect Lebanese meal in the city. First off, Lebanese cuisine is known for its incredible freshness and a beautiful balance of flavors. While my recent meal had an unexpected tang, it’s true that lemon, sumac, and even pomegranate molasses are staples, bringing a zesty brightness to many dishes. Hummus, for instance, often has a good squeeze of lemon, and some salads like fattoush are dressed with a sharp, delicious vinaigrette. The key is balance – it shouldn't overwhelm the other flavors. If you’re trying a mezze platter, you should expect a variety of textures and tastes, from creamy hummus and baba ghanoush to crisp tabbouleh and savory stuffed grape leaves. Each dip and bite should offer something unique, not just a singular, dominant acidic note. When you’re exploring Lebanese restaurants in NYC, look for places that boast fresh, homemade pita bread – there's nothing quite like warm, fluffy pita straight from the oven to scoop up all those delicious dips. A good grilled meat platter should feature tender, perfectly seasoned chicken, lamb, or beef, often accompanied by roasted bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions, offering a smoky contrast. The fries, if served, should be crispy and savory, a comforting side, not a sour surprise! Don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations, especially if you're new to the cuisine or have specific taste preferences. They can guide you through the menu, perhaps suggesting specific pastries or a unique grilled chicken dish that truly shines. Remember, Lebanese food is all about sharing, so ordering a few different mezze and a main dish or two for the table is always a great way to experience a broader range of what's offered. Ultimately, finding your favorite Lebanese spot in NYC might take a few tries, but it’s definitely worth the delicious exploration. Pay attention to reviews that mention specific dishes, and don't hesitate to give feedback if something truly isn't right. After all, a great dining experience is about enjoying every single bite!
