FRESHMAN COLLEGE DORM TIPS
College freshmen, listen up!
Here are a few tips to make your college move-in process a whole lot smoother. I learned these after two years of living in a dorm, and they would have saved me a lot of trouble:
1. Stock up on command strips: You'll want to hang things up, and trust me, the local stores run out fast. Get plenty beforehand!
2. Get creative with storage: Sharing a room is fun, but it shrinks your space. Think ahead and find clever storage solutions.
3. Shop early: Buy everything you need ahead of time. Waiting until the last minute means empty shelves everywhere you go.
These tips will help you navigate your new college life with ease! 🎓✨

Okay, incoming freshmen, building on those initial tips, let me share even more insights from my own dorm experience that I really wish I knew sooner! First off, let's talk more about storage. The article mentioned getting creative, but seriously, you'll need way more than you think. My biggest regret was not bringing enough dedicated storage. Think beyond just a few bins. Under-bed storage containers are non-negotiable for maximizing space in those tiny rooms – look for ones with wheels! Vertical storage is your best friend: over-the-door organizers for shoes or toiletries, stackable drawers, and even bed risers with outlets built-in can be lifesavers. I ended up needing so many extra tubs for snacks, school supplies, and seasonal clothes. Trust me, you can never have too many organizational solutions in a dorm. Another critical point, and something I learned the hard way, is that there are not gonna be many outlets in your dorm room. You'll have your phone, laptop, desk lamp, maybe a fan, and who knows what else your roommate brings. A good quality power strip (or two!) is absolutely essential. Make sure it's surge protected to keep your electronics safe. Some dorms have rules about what kind you can use, so check with your housing office, but generally, a multi-outlet strip with USB ports will be invaluable. It lets you charge everything you need without fighting over the limited wall outlets. Beyond those, here are a few more things that made my dorm life so much better: Mattress Topper: Dorm beds are notoriously uncomfortable. A good mattress topper will transform your sleep quality, which is crucial for staying focused in classes. Shower Caddy & Flip-Flops: If you're sharing a communal bathroom, these are absolute must-haves for hygiene and convenience. Trust me, you don't want to walk barefoot in those showers! Good Lighting: Dorms often have harsh overhead lights. A nice desk lamp or even some string lights can create a cozier, more inviting atmosphere. Noise-Canceling Headphones: For studying or just getting some peace and quiet when your roommate is on the phone or you're in a noisy common area. Command Hooks & Strips (more uses!): You'll use these for everything! Beyond hanging posters, they're perfect for organizing cables, hanging lightweight shelving, and, as I discovered, they're fantastic for hanging towels to dry without damaging walls. Just double-check your dorm's policy on adhesive products. Mini First-Aid Kit: Small cuts, headaches, stomach aches happen. Be prepared so you don't have to trek to the campus health center for minor issues. And finally, for move-in day itself: pack an 'essentials' bag with things you'll need immediately – toiletries, a change of clothes, phone charger, important documents. This saves you from digging through boxes right away. Also, try to coordinate big items with your roommate to avoid duplicates and maximize space. Adjusting to dorm life takes a bit of time, but with these tips, you'll be well on your way to making your new space feel like home!
