On a chilly day in Brooklyn, I took on the challenge of finding the closest Black-owned chicken wing shop—a task that took over 20 minutes but was well worth the effort. There is something uniquely satisfying about knowing your purchase directly supports Black entrepreneurs. While waiting in the cold, I ended up sharing a moment with a beautiful Black woman who had been stood up on her first date by an hour and a half. Instead of feeling down, we ended up bonding over shots and food, turning a tough situation into a memorable experience. Stories like hers remind us of the importance of community support and standing together, especially during times dedicated to honoring Black history. Choosing to buy from Black-owned spots goes beyond just food preferences—it’s a gesture of solidarity and recognition of Black culture and resilience. If you’re in Brooklyn or any city, take some time to look for Black-owned businesses during this month. You might discover hidden gems like Lacey Burger and Uncle Roger’s, places with authentic flavors and stories worth hearing. It’s also a way to counteract negative stereotypes, such as those about Black people only loving fried chicken and Kool-Aid, by highlighting the diverse and rich experiences within the community. In my experience, the effort to seek out these businesses creates a deeper connection to Black history and present-day struggles. It’s also a reminder not to let anyone disrespect or stand up a Black woman—or anyone, really—because every act of kindness and respect counts. Supporting Black-owned businesses is a practical and impactful step you can take to celebrate Black History Month and beyond.
