People will project a whole insecurity onto you and get genuinely confused when you don't pick it up.

... Read moreIn my personal experience, dealing with assumptions about self-esteem based purely on race can be both frustrating and enlightening. Often, people project their own insecurities onto others, which can lead to misunderstandings when those projected feelings are not reciprocated. For Black individuals, this frequently manifests as others assuming they have low self-esteem without any real basis for such beliefs. This kind of stereotyping is harmful because it reduces complex human experiences to simplistic and prejudiced views. Low self-esteem is a personal and situational experience that varies widely among individuals, regardless of their racial background. Unfortunately, societal narratives sometimes erroneously link Black identity with insecurities, perpetuating harmful myths. I've noticed that wearing something as simple as a bold lip gloss can be an act of self-expression and confidence that defies these stereotypes. In fact, using makeup can empower individuals to take control of their appearance and present themselves exactly as they want to be seen. This empowerment is a strong counter to the assumption that Black people inherently struggle with self-esteem. Understanding and challenging these assumptions is crucial. Everyone deserves to be seen as an individual, free from the burden of societal prejudices. By recognizing and calling out these stereotypes, we can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful society where self-worth is acknowledged as a personal quality, not dictated by race or appearance. Ultimately, pushing back against these misconceptions is not only about changing perceptions but about fostering genuine empathy and respect for the diverse experiences of Black individuals and all people.
