Why You Should go to Eckerd College🐚

I go to Eckerd College and am a biology major. I’m going into my junior year and absolutely love Eckerd!!

The best part about going to school there is the student life. Even though it is a small liberal arts school campus is always alive!! We have traditions such as Kappa Saturday that are fun things that we all go do.

I love being on the beach with my friends. Our marine science building is the closest academic building to the water. I’ve walked out of classes there to see dolphins swimming close to the shore on campus.

The nature at Eckerd is so beautiful. We are the top college with the most bird diversity on campus. We also have dolphins that swim super close to the shore daily. I’ve also seen manatees, (small) sharks, and otters. We also have the occasional alligator in some of our ponds!

... Read moreOne of the most unique aspects of life at Eckerd College, often a pleasant surprise for prospective students, is our incredible Winter Term. Unlike traditional semester breaks, January at Eckerd is dedicated to an intensive, immersive learning experience. Students get to choose from a wide array of specialized courses, often taught off-campus or with a strong experiential component. I've heard friends delve into anything from marine biology research in the Keys to studying Renaissance art in Italy, or even taking unique on-campus classes like 'The Science of Brewing' or 'Digital Storytelling.' It's a fantastic opportunity to explore a passion outside your major, or gain practical experience through an internship. This short but impactful term truly enriches our academic journey, offering a chance to learn in deeply engaging ways without the pressure of a full course load, making it a highlight of the academic year. Beyond academics, the beach life at Eckerd is truly unparalleled. Imagine having a pristine private beach right on campus – it’s not just a backdrop, it’s an integral part of our daily lives. I’ve spent countless afternoons there, whether it's for a quick study break with the sound of waves, a paddleboarding adventure with friends (yes, we get free paddleboard and kayak rentals!), or simply watching the breathtaking sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Our marine science building being so close means I often walk out of class and see dolphins leaping in the water, a truly magical sight. And those iconic swings that face the ocean? They’re perfect for unwinding after a long day or catching up with friends under the stars. It’s not just a place to swim; it’s our outdoor classroom, our social hub, and a constant reminder of the incredible natural beauty that surrounds us. Life at Eckerd is anything but dull, and the student community here is incredibly vibrant and welcoming. One of my favorite things is how genuinely pet-friendly our campus is. Walking around, you’ll see dogs playing on the grass, cats lounging in dorm windows – it truly feels like a bigger, friendlier family. It's not just an amenity; it adds a unique warmth to the campus atmosphere. We have so many traditions that bring us together, from casual 'darty' events on the rugby field to more organized campus-wide gatherings. Because it’s a smaller school, it’s easy to get involved and find your niche, whether it’s through clubs, intramural sports, or just hanging out at the waterfront. The sense of community is strong, and there's always something happening, whether it's an outdoor movie night, a student performance, or simply impromptu gatherings by the water. It’s this blend of academic rigor, natural beauty, and a tight-knit, active student body that truly makes Eckerd College feel like home.
