More reference drawings I used

Following up on my last post about those amazing reference drawings, I wanted to dive a little deeper into why using references, especially for something as complex and expressive as monkeys, is an absolute game-changer for any artist. When I first started drawing, I struggled so much with getting animal anatomy right. Everything looked stiff or just... off! They really helped me understand the structure beneath the fur. So, what makes a good monkey drawing reference? For me, it’s a mix of detailed photos showing different angles and poses, and even video clips to capture movement. You want to study how their limbs bend, how their hands grip, and especially their facial expressions. Monkeys are so dynamic, from playfully curious to, yes, sometimes even looking 'IM HUNGRY' or a bit grumpy, and capturing that personality is key! Don't be afraid to look for references of different monkey species too – a chimpanzee's face is very different from a capuchin's, and exploring these variations can really expand your artistic range. When you’re looking for references, think beyond just static images. I love searching on platforms like Pinterest or even just using specific hashtags on Instagram (like #monkeydrawingreference or #animalanatomy). Sometimes, just watching nature documentaries or YouTube videos of monkeys can give you a fantastic understanding of their movements and behaviors. Here’s a little tip that helped me: instead of just copying a reference directly, try to break it down into basic shapes first. Think of the head as a sphere, the torso as a bean, and then build up the limbs with cylinders. This helps you understand the underlying forms rather than just surface details. Pay special attention to their hands and feet – they’re incredibly dexterous and unique! And for fur, don't try to draw every single strand. Instead, focus on the direction and flow of the fur, using varying line weights to suggest texture. Using references isn't cheating; it's a vital learning tool. It allows us to observe the world around us more closely and translate that observation into our art. I've seen my own monkey drawings improve vastly just by consistently studying real-life examples and the work of other talented artists.
