Hocking Hills, Ohio
If you love the outdoors and hiking, Hocking Hills is the place to go! This was about a 2 1/2 hour drive from my hometown. We did the trip in one day. I definitely recommend making it a long weekend trip so you can hit all of the key spots. The resort was so nice!
10/10 recommend and will be going back!
Oh my gosh, Hocking Hills! If you're anything like me and live for the outdoors, this place is an absolute dream. I recently squeezed in a day trip, and while it was incredible, I left wishing I had booked a whole long weekend. Seriously, 10/10 recommend making it a multi-day adventure to truly soak it all in! My quick visit from about 2.5 hours away gave me a taste of its magic, but there's a reason everyone raves about needing more time. Imagine having the chance to explore not just one, but several of those breathtaking rocky gorges, each with its own unique path and serene stream. We saw glimpses of incredible waterfalls cascading into clear, shallow pools, surrounded by dense green trees ā it's truly a natural wonderland. Next time, I'm definitely dedicating more time to places like Old Man's Cave, which I heard has an Ohio Historical Marker explaining its fascinating formation and ecological significance. The thought of descending stone steps into a dark, tunnel-like passage carved into moss-covered rock formations just fills me with excitement! And I'm dying to find that aerial view spot that looks down into a rocky crevice with small pools and green moss. It sounds like something straight out of a fairy tale. For anyone planning their own Hocking Hills getaway, here are a few things I learned and wish I'd known more about: Top Tips for Your Hocking Hills Adventure: More Than a Day Trip: Trust me on this one. While a day is better than nothing, Hocking Hills truly shines when you have time to wander. With so many trails leading to stunning waterfalls, impressive rock formations, and serene forest paths (even if they have a muddy puddle or two!), you'll want to take your time. Footwear is Key: Those moss-covered rock formations and stream crossings mean sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must. You'll be navigating everything from smooth paths to uneven terrain, sometimes even spotting wildlife like a curious turtle in the murky water! Explore Beyond the Main Attractions: While places like Old Man's Cave are iconic, don't miss out on other hidden gems. Look for trails that lead to smaller, less crowded waterfalls or offer unique perspectives like a cave-like opening above the falls. Pack Smart: Bring layers, plenty of water, and snacks. Cell service can be spotty in some areas, so download maps beforehand. And don't forget your camera ā every corner offers a scenic view perfect for capturing memories. Consider Your Stay: The resort we saw looked so nice, and there are many options from cabins to camping. Staying overnight allows you to experience the trails in different lights, perhaps even catching a beautiful sunset or sunrise over the rugged landscape. Summer Events & Things To Do: I saw signs for "Things to do Summer Events." Definitely check the local calendar before you go for any seasonal activities or guided tours that might enhance your experience. Hocking Hills is a place that truly captures the heart of nature lovers. Whether you're looking for an intense hike or just a peaceful stroll by a stream flowing over large boulders, it offers something for everyone. I'm already counting down the days until my next visit ā perhaps a long weekend this time, full of exploration and relaxation!
