Wow, if you're looking for a destination that combines vibrant history, stunning architecture, and an unforgettable atmosphere, then Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, should be at the top of your list! I recently had the most incredible time exploring this historic gem, and I just had to share all my favorite things to do and must-see spots. Trust me, this charming city, often called Viejo San Juan, is truly magical. First things first: just *walk*. Seriously, the colorful cobblestone streets are an attraction in themselves. Every corner offers a new photo opportunity with pastel-colored buildings, intricate balconies, and blooming flowers. It feels like stepping back in time, and you'll want to get lost (in a good way!) wandering through its narrow lanes. Don't forget to look up at the stunning architecture! A visit to Old San Juan wouldn't be complete without exploring its two magnificent forts: El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) and Castillo de San Cristóbal. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites offer breathtaking views of the ocean and the city. El Morro, with its sprawling green lawn perfect for kite-flying, is an iconic symbol of Puerto Rico. You can spend hours here imagining the soldiers who once defended this island. San Cristóbal is equally impressive, offering a different perspective with its various levels and tunnels. Both are a must-do for history buffs and anyone who appreciates incredible views. For a relaxing stroll, head to Paseo de la Princesa. This beautiful promenade runs along the city walls, offering picturesque views of San Juan Bay. It’s particularly lovely in the late afternoon when street vendors, artists, and musicians create a lively, festive atmosphere. It leads towards La Fortaleza, the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, which is another stunning example of colonial architecture. When it comes to food, Old San Juan is a paradise! You absolutely have to try mofongo, a delicious plantain-based dish. I had mine with garlic shrimp, and it was divine! Keep an eye out for local eateries serving authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. And for a refreshing treat, grab a 'piragua' – a shaved ice cone with your choice of fruit syrup from a street vendor. The local coffee is also exceptional, so make sure to stop by a café for a true taste of PR. Shopping here is also a unique experience. Beyond the typical souvenir shops, you'll find charming boutiques showcasing local artisan crafts, art galleries, and jewelry stores. It’s a great place to pick up unique gifts and treasures that truly reflect the island's culture. Getting around Old San Juan is super easy. It's very walkable, but there are also free trolleys that can take you to the main attractions, which is a lifesaver on a hot day. I found that mornings are best for exploring the forts to avoid the biggest crowds and the midday heat. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated! The vibrant energy of Old San Juan is something truly special, and I already can't wait to go back and discover even more. It’s definitely a highlight of any trip to Puerto Rico.
