RESTAURANT REVIEW: TOKKI (closed now)

... Read moreIt's truly heartbreaking when a beloved restaurant closes its doors, and TOKKI was one of those places that genuinely left a mark. Their modern Korean style tapas were an absolute delight, crafting memories that will stay with me. I still often think about the perfectly seared Hokkaido scallops, bursting with fresh sea flavor, and the rich, melt-in-mouth Dae-chang over rice – a dish I wholeheartedly recommend trying if you ever see it on a menu. The comforting yet exciting corn cheese with baguette toasts was always a must-order, a perfect balance of sweet and savory. And their creative side truly shone through with unique offerings like the crispy Arancini balls topped with cheese and herbs, a playful twist on a classic. Each plate at TOKKI felt like a small culinary masterpiece, showcasing the versatility and depth of Korean flavors. But as one chapter closes, another begins, and the good news is that the talented team behind TOKKI hasn't left us completely. Their sister establishment, Liu's Cafe, continues to thrive, and I'm eagerly anticipating my visit to their newest venture, danbi. Knowing that danbi comes from the same creative minds, I have high hopes that it will carry on TOKKI's legacy of innovative and delicious Korean cuisine. I'm curious to see if danbi will continue the tapas style or introduce a new concept. I'm definitely looking forward to discovering their unique dishes and hoping to find some delightful desserts, perhaps a reimagined sweet potato dish or a new take on shaved ice with ice cream, similar to the memorable white bowl with green fruit dessert I enjoyed at TOKKI. For those intrigued by 'Korean tapas' – a term that perfectly describes TOKKI's offerings – it's an incredible culinary journey. Korean tapas, often referred to as 'anju,' are essentially small, shareable plates designed to complement drinks and conversation. This style of dining allows you to sample a wide array of Korean flavors, from spicy kimchi pancakes to savory stews, fresh seafood, and marinated meats. It's an excellent way to explore the diverse culinary landscape of Korea without committing to one large dish. When you're searching for a fantastic Korean restaurant, look for places that prioritize fresh ingredients, offer a balanced menu of traditional favorites and modern interpretations, and ideally, have a vibrant, inviting atmosphere that encourages sharing and exploration. Regarding the 'danbi karaoke bar' query, while many Korean establishments seamlessly blend dining with entertainment, the initial buzz around danbi suggests it’s primarily a new restaurant. However, considering the dynamic nature of Korean dining culture, it wouldn't be entirely surprising if they eventually incorporate some form of entertainment or a lively bar scene. It's always exciting to see how new places evolve! I'm planning to check out danbi very soon and promise to share an honest review, detailing the ambiance, the menu, and of course, my favorite dishes, so you know exactly what to expect from this promising new addition to the Korean food scene.
