Understanding your hair porosity is a game changer in curly hair care. From my personal experience, I found that determining whether my hair is high or low porosity helped me transform my hair routine and achieve much better results. Low porosity hair often feels resistant to moisture because its cuticles lie flat and tightly sealed, like a raincoat repelling water. I noticed that with my low porosity hair, water tends to bead on the surface and it takes a long time to dry. Initially, I was using heavy creams and oils thinking they would nourish my curls, but they just weighed my hair down and left it greasy. Shifting to lightweight, water-based leave-ins and incorporating gentle heat, such as steam or a hooded dryer, helped lift the cuticle and improved product absorption. Regular use of clarifying shampoos was essential to remove product buildup because low porosity hair doesn't absorb products easily, resulting in what seems like product sitting on top. Avoiding heavy butters and thick oils made a noticeable difference in bounce and definition. With high porosity hair, the opposite is true. Its cuticle is raised or damaged, which lets moisture in quickly but also evaporate just as fast, leaving hair dry and fragile. I learned that enriching the hair with rich butters and oils helps seal the cuticle. Protein treatments became a vital part of my routine to fill gaps from damage, preventing breakage and split ends. Using a cold water rinse to close the cuticle and layering products with LOC (liquid, oil, cream) or LCO (liquid, cream, oil) methods locked in moisture effectively. It's crucial to keep in mind porosity can change over time due to factors like bleaching, heat styling, or coloring. I had to adapt my routine when my hair suddenly became thirstier and frizzier, which helped me maintain healthy curls instead of struggling with dryness and product buildup. Overall, knowing your hair porosity and customizing your hair care regimen accordingly saves time, money, and frustration—allowing you to embrace your natural curls with confidence.
