If you were in middle school or high school in the 90s or 2000s, your teacher made you watch at least one of these movies on a rainy day and it's been blissfully residing in your cerebral cortex sans financial obligation ever since (💕jokes💕) FEATURING: 🛷 Cool Runnings 📐 Stand and Deliver 🗺️ National Treasure 🦶 Harry and the Hendersons #whatyourfavoritesaysaboutyou #nostalgia #90s #90smovies #80s

... Read moreYou know, thinking back to 'Harry and the Hendersons,' it’s funny how many times that movie came up in class. If you're like me, you might be wondering about its age rating today, especially if you have kids or younger siblings. It's officially rated PG. Why PG? Well, while it's generally a heartwarming family Bigfoot story about a family hitting Bigfoot with their car, there are a few elements that might be a little intense for very young viewers. Harry himself, despite being a gentle giant, is a large, hairy cryptid, and his initial appearance can be a bit startling. There are also some moments of peril or suspense where the family tries to hide Harry or encounters hunters. However, the overall tone is lighthearted, focusing on family bonds and acceptance. The 'wacky shenanigans' are mostly harmless, and it certainly doesn't delve into anything truly scary. For me, it was always a comforting watch, full of laughs and a touch of magic. It teaches a valuable lesson about understanding and protecting creatures that are different, making it a timeless choice for family movie night, probably best for kids aged 6-7 and up, who can handle a little suspense. Speaking of movies that leave an impression, 'Cool Runnings' was another classroom staple. I remember being so inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team overcoming tropical weather to compete in the Winter Olympics. It truly felt like a lesson in believing that anything is possible, even when the odds are stacked against you. John Candy's character dispensing life advice felt so profound back then, making you feel like you should try harder in class, even if it only lasted for 47 minutes before returning to your regularly scheduled apathy! It's a fantastic film about perseverance and teamwork, great for sparking discussion about overcoming challenges. And then there was 'Stand and Deliver.' This true story about Jaime Escalante, the math teacher who aggressively inspired his students, always stuck with me. The idea that he could get us to care about algebra, proving that the system will literally work you into an early grave, yet still motivate us, was powerful. It made me think about the value of education and how one dedicated teacher can make an impossible difference. It really challenged the notion that standardized testing is worth more than a functioning cardiovascular system, highlighting the human element in education. Finally, who could forget 'National Treasure'? Nicholas Cage stealing the Declaration of Independence and committing innumerable federal crimes always felt like a wild ride! My teacher labeled this as educational, showing us American landmarks in between grand larceny sequences. I learned absolutely nothing about actual history from it at the time, but it definitely sparked a lifelong passion for adventure and mysteries. It's funny how these movies, intended for a rainy day or as a binding excuse to abandon lesson plans, ended up shaping our tastes and memories in unexpected ways. They truly reside in our cerebral cortex, sans financial obligation!
