Rejected by the then all-white All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in her teens because of the color of her skin, Mamie Johnson went on to try out for the men’s Negro League. She not only made the team, but she became the first woman pitcher and one of three women to play in the Negro Leagues. #blackhistory #baseball #february #blackisbeautiful #africanamerican

... Read moreI recently stumbled upon the incredible legacy of Mamie 'Peanut' Johnson, and I just had to share her story! You know, sometimes you read about historical figures and realize how much they truly paved the way for us today. Her journey is a perfect example of resilience and breaking barriers, proving that 'BECAUSE OF THEM WE CAN' truly holds meaning. Born in 1935, Mamie Johnson's passion for baseball was undeniable from a young age. Imagine being a talented young woman, eager to play, only to be told you can't because of your skin color. That's exactly what happened when she was rejected by the then all-white All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. But instead of giving up, Mamie's determination led her to try out for the men's Negro Leagues – a bold move that changed history. It wasn't just about making the team; Mamie excelled. Standing at only 5 feet 3 inches, she earned the nickname 'Peanut' not just for her size, but also for her powerful pitches and incredible curveball that kept batters guessing. From 1953 to 1955, pitching for the Indianapolis Clowns, she compiled an impressive record of 33 wins and 8 losses, often outperforming her male counterparts. Can you imagine the grit it took to step onto that mound, knowing you were not only one of the few women but also redefining what was possible? Her presence, alongside two other women, Toni Stone and Connie Morgan, in the Negro Leagues was truly groundbreaking. These leagues, while born out of segregation, were vibrant spaces of incredible talent and fierce competition. For Mamie to not just play, but to thrive in this environment, speaks volumes about her skill, mental fortitude, and unwavering spirit. She wasn't just playing baseball; she was challenging societal norms with every pitch. After her impressive baseball career, Mamie continued to make a difference. She went on to work as a nurse for 30 years and remained an advocate for the sport and for recognizing the contributions of Negro League players. Her life story reminds us that true impact isn't just made on the field, but also in how we carry ourselves and inspire others off it. Seeing that image of her, smiling in her baseball cap and jersey, truly embodies the spirit of someone who never let obstacles define her. What an absolute legend!

Books to read during Black History Month
