Drying my clients clothes BEFORE washing them 😬

Living on a farm means that access to laundry services or repair is not always immediate, so we have to get creative. One surprising workaround we tried was drying my client’s clothes before washing them. Although it sounds counterintuitive, drying clothes first can sometimes help in certain situations—especially when your washer is out of commission and you need to freshen up clothes quickly. For example, if the clothes are slightly damp or muddy, drying can help loosen dirt and odors, making the subsequent wash—or even handwashing—more effective. Also, drying can reduce the bulk and weight of very wet clothing, which can make handwashing or using alternative washing methods easier. In rural living situations, many people rely on manual techniques or older appliances that require more care and improvisation. I’ve learned that laundry doesn’t always follow the conventional 'washer then dryer' rules. Instead, adapting to the circumstances—like drying before washing—can save time, water, and effort while keeping clothes wearable and clean. This experience also reinforced the importance of flexible laundry solutions for farm clients, especially during appliance outages. I encourage others in similar situations to think outside the box; sometimes, methods like drying before washing are just small hacks that can ease bigger day-to-day challenges.
