The power of curtains
Wasn’t what I wanted to do with this window. It has such a great ledge that I didn’t want to cover it up, but I also wanted privacy— without the look of blinds.
I thought they would be a little less sheer since they’re called privacy sheers lol it gives us a smidge of privacy but not enough. Either way, they look AMAZING!!! We decided to put the rod almost up to the ceiling like all the suggestions say and I have to say that I’m glad we did.
We will be getting another curtain to layer so we can have privacy when we choose. What color should we get??

Hey everyone! Following up on my recent living room curtain transformation, I’m still buzzing about how much of a difference the right window treatment can make. It's truly amazing how a simple change can totally redefine a space, especially when you're aiming for both style and practicality. One big question I often get (and something I wrestled with myself!) is how to achieve privacy in your living room without resorting to traditional blinds, or how curtains can work with them. Like many of you, I really didn't want the visual clutter of blinds, especially since my window has such a lovely ledge I wanted to keep clear. This is where the magic of layering curtains comes in! While my initial "privacy sheers" looked beautiful and definitely helped to diffuse light, creating a softer look, I quickly realized they weren’t quite enough for full privacy, especially at night. That's why I’m now planning to add a second, thicker layer. This approach not only gives you complete control over light and privacy – from bright and airy to cozy and private – but it also adds incredible dimension and richness to your room's aesthetic. Think about a beautiful sheer curtain for daytime light, paired with a blackout curtain or a heavier drape for evening seclusion. It’s a chic alternative to blinds, giving you that 'before and after' glow-up without compromising on style. Another game-changer, and something I can't recommend enough, is using long curtains to make your room feel significantly taller. You saw in my 'before' image how bare windows can make a room appear plain and even shorter. The trick, as many interior designers suggest, and what I proudly did, is to hang your curtain rod as high as possible – ideally almost up to the ceiling. This simple act draws the eye upwards, creating an illusion of height and making your entire living room feel more expansive and grand. Don't skimp on the length either! Floor-length curtains are key here. They should just graze the floor, or even puddle slightly, to maximize that luxurious, elongated effect. Curtains that stop short just above the windowsill can actually make a room feel smaller and chop up the visual line. By extending the rod wider than the window frame itself, you also ensure that when your curtains are open, they can stack neatly to the side, allowing maximum sunlight to flood in and making your window appear even wider and grander. This technique, coupled with the right fabric, can truly transform a window from a bare opening into a stunning focal point that brightens the room and enhances its overall architectural presence. Choosing the right color for your second layer is my next big decision! Should I stick with another shade of white or cream to keep it light and airy, or go for a contrasting color to add more drama and depth? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on layering curtains for privacy and making rooms look taller. What combinations have worked for you? And for those of you who've used Amazon for your curtains, any specific brands or styles you recommend for that perfect, luxurious look and feel? Let's share our tips and turn our living rooms into truly inviting and stylish retreats!
