Black Music Month 2026….Day 18

Robert McFerrin Sr. was a pioneering American opera singer and one of the most important African American figures in classical music history. He is best known for becoming the **first African American man to sing with the Metropolitan Opera** in New York, making his debut in 1955 as Amonasro in Verdi's *Aida*. His appearance came only weeks after Marian Anderson broke the Met's racial barrier for principal performers.

### Early Life

* Born **March 19, 1921**, in Marianna.

* Raised in a religious family; his father was a Baptist minister who encouraged gospel music.

* Moved to St. Louis as a teenager, where teachers recognized and developed his exceptional baritone voice.

* Studied at Fisk University and later at the Chicago Musical College.

### Career Highlights

* Won the **Metropolitan Opera National Auditions** in 1953.

* Became the first Black male member of the Metropolitan Opera in 1955.

* Performed in 10 operas during his years with the company, including the title role in *Rigoletto*.

* Provided the singing voice for Sidney Poitier in the 1959 film adaptation of *Porgy and Bess*.

* Sang on Broadway and with organizations such as the National Negro Opera Company and the New York City Opera.

### Legacy

McFerrin's success helped open doors for future generations of Black opera singers. Many artists cited him as an inspiration and trailblazer in a field where racial barriers had long existed.

He was also the father of the Grammy-winning singer and conductor Bobby McFerrin, famous for the song Don't Worry, Be Happy. Bobby McFerrin often spoke about his father's profound influence on his musical life. He remains remembered as a groundbreaking artist who helped transform opportunities for African Americans in opera.

... Read moreReflecting on Robert McFerrin Sr.'s remarkable career reveals not only his immense talent but also the barriers he overcame in classical music, a genre historically inaccessible to many African Americans. His debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955 was a groundbreaking moment, opening doors for countless Black opera singers who followed. What stands out most is McFerrin's journey from a religious upbringing—where gospel music flourished under his Baptist minister father’s guidance—to formal music education at Fisk University and Chicago Musical College. This blend of sacred and classical influences shaped his rich baritone voice and artistic expression. His success in winning the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Auditions in 1953 demonstrated his exceptional skill, but it was his perseverance in a racially segregated era that truly defined his legacy. Performing lead roles such as Amonasro in *Aida* and Rigoletto, McFerrin challenged racial stereotypes and proved that African American singers could excel in the classical canon. McFerrin's contributions extended beyond opera stages; lending his voice to Sidney Poitier’s character in the film adaptation of *Porgy and Bess* made opera accessible to broader audiences. His involvement with the National Negro Opera Company and the New York City Opera further emphasized his dedication to lifting Black artists. An interesting personal note is his influence on his son, Bobby McFerrin, a Grammy-winning musician known worldwide. Bobby often credited his father as a profound inspiration, reflecting how Robert's trailblazing career not only impacted the classical music world but also nurtured a new generation of genre-defying artists. In celebrating Black Music Month 2026, Robert McFerrin Sr.’s story stands as a powerful reminder of the progress made and the ongoing journey toward equality in the arts. His life encourages aspiring musicians to persevere and break barriers with talent and determination. Engaging with his legacy offers valuable insights into the intersection of music, culture, and social change.
