Garnet Ghost Town, Montana

There are two ways to get here, the easy way and the very hard way. We didn't know about the easy way. The hardest starts out gentle but then takes you on very rocky one lane road. If you meet up with another case, go slow around them as there is not much room to navigate around each other. The road is approximately 20 miles to the range station.

Once we arrived, we saw RVs at the top, that's when we asked at the ranger station. The rangers smiled and told us we must have come up the right road. They informed us to leave going the other way. Very wise decision.

From my visit, I can say that planning your route carefully makes all the difference. The so-called 'hard way' described is a 20-mile single-lane rocky road that demands cautious driving. I remember when I encountered another vehicle on the narrow stretch – slowing down and communicating with other drivers was critical to safely passing each other. This part of the trip offered a glimpse into Montana's rugged landscape but definitely calls for a capable vehicle and a patient driver. Once you reach the top, you'll find a ranger station which serves as a helpful hub. The rangers are friendly and provide essential information. For instance, they advised us to take the 'easy way' on the way back — a less taxing route that beginners or RV travelers will appreciate. I noticed several RVs parked at the summit, which is a good indicator of its accessibility to larger vehicles. Inside the ghost town itself, the history and atmosphere are captivating. Wander through the well-preserved buildings and imagine life during the mining boom. Garnet is one of Montana's best-preserved ghost towns, offering a unique blend of wilderness and history. Bringing water, snacks, and appropriate gear is important too, since services at the site are limited. For anyone planning a trip, checking weather conditions beforehand is wise, as the rocky road can become slippery or hazardous after rain. Overall, Garnet Ghost Town is a rewarding destination for those willing to take on the drive and immerse themselves in Montana’s wild frontier history.
