The Standard & Poor's 500 is the stock market index that measures the performance of the 500 largest companies in the United States, listed on major stock exchanges like the NYSE and NASDAQ.
Why does the S & P 500 matter?
U.S. Economic Indicators: The S & P 500 best reflects the U.S. economic overview because the total value of stocks in this index accounts for over 80% of the total stock market value.
Covers a wide range of industries: This index includes leading companies from multiple business segments such as technology, finance, healthcare, and energy, making it an overall indicator of market direction.
Strictly selected: The company to be included in the index must meet several criteria, such as having high market value and good trading liquidity.
How to Work and Invest
Calculation Method: The S & P 500 uses a method, weighted by market value, that means that higher-valued companies (such as Apple, Microsoft) will have more influence on index changes.
How to invest: Investors cannot buy the index directly, but can invest in products that reference it, such as Index Funds or Exchange Traded Funds, which invest in S & P 500 stocks.
Investing in the S & P 500 is therefore popular for investors who want to diversify, and want returns that grow with the U.S. economy in the long run.
