Father’s Day student activity / Feliz día de padre

Participating in Father’s Day activities with students is a truly rewarding experience. One of the activities that worked well in my classroom was encouraging students to create personalized cards and write messages to their fathers or grandfathers. It’s a wonderful way for kids to express gratitude and practice writing skills in both English and Spanish. I found that incorporating phrases like “I love my Dad because...” or “My Grandpa enjoys...” helped students think creatively and share meaningful reasons why their fathers and grandfathers are special. This approach not only builds language skills but also strengthens their emotional connection to family. Another engaging idea is to have children draw pictures representing their favorite moments with their dads or grandpas. This can be paired with short sentences describing the drawing. For example, “My dad teaches me how to play baseball” or “Mi abuelito me enseña jardinería.” These bilingual expressions enrich vocabulary and cultural appreciation. Including the topic of favorite sports and hobbies allows students to personalize their projects and fosters discussion. Asking questions like “His favorite sport is...” or “Su deporte favorito es...” encourages participation and comparison among classmates, which is great for community building. Lastly, folding and decorating greeting cards is a tactile craft that students enjoy. It allows them to take home a physical token of love and appreciation. Teachers can facilitate by providing templates in both languages, making the activity accessible to all learners. With these bilingual Father’s Day activities, students not only improve their language skills but also celebrate family ties, making the classroom environment more inclusive and nurturing.
