Things I Plan On Doing As A First Year Teacher

... Read moreStepping into your first classroom as a new teacher is such an exciting, yet often overwhelming, experience! I’ve been busy planning every detail for my 'first year teacher classroom setup,' aiming to create a space that’s not only organized but also incredibly engaging for my future students. I truly believe that a well-thought-out classroom can set the tone for the entire year, especially for those crucial 'first day of school activities.' One of the ideas I’m most excited about is implementing a 'Class Dojo Store' – or as I’m calling it, my 'Dojo Shop'! I’ve seen how much positive reinforcement can transform a classroom, and giving students the chance to earn points for good behavior and then 'spend' them is brilliant. My plan includes a multi-tiered rolling cart filled with fun rewards. But the real showstopper? My 'Desk Pet Shop'! Students will be able to use their hard-earned Dojo points to adopt adorable desk pets, complete with little rescue certificates. It's a fantastic way to teach responsibility and give them a tangible reward for their efforts. Beyond the rewards system, making the classroom feel like a 'welcome to new class' space is paramount. I'm setting up a designated 'cozy classroom library' with flexible seating options, making it an inviting haven for independent reading time. To make reading even more fun, I’ll have a bucket full of 'BOOK BUDDIES' – stuffed animals that students can choose to read with. It’s a simple touch that I hope will encourage even the most reluctant readers! For those moments when students finish their work ahead of time, I’m preparing 'Early finisher bins.' These bins will be stocked with engaging, educational activities like Legos, Playdough, and Brain Flakes. It keeps them productive and prevents disruptions, allowing me to focus on students who need extra support. And speaking of organization, my 'Ketchup folders' are going to be a lifesaver! These folders, easily identifiable with cute ketchup bottle signs, will be where students put any unfinished work until they have time to 'ketchup.' It’s a clear system that helps everyone stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Crafting this 'new teacher classroom setup' has been a labor of love, and I can't wait to see these ideas come to life. From the interactive 'dojo store' to the practical 'early finisher activities' and the inviting reading nooks, every element is designed to foster a positive, productive, and joyful learning environment right from day one!

Depending on the grade: -have a drop box where your students can write down a note for you. Whether they need something and don’t want to ask, are having a bad day, etc. -have a station with common things like hairties, menstrual items, snacks, etc catered to the age range you teach. Even if it’s elementary, keep combs and hairties. It’s surprising to see how many kids come in without their hair brushed or without breakfast.
