Looking to learn Korean while living abroad? 🇰🇷🌱🫂

Before I arrived in Korea to teach English from Canada 🇨🇦, I learned the basics of the language, as well as did some self-learning online when I finally arrived, including:

📝 Halfway into my first year living abroad, I got a tutor on Preply! There are lots of price ranges so you can find the best fit for you.

📝 Textbooks like Talk to Me In Korean are GREAT (and a big fan favorite across KOLARIS teachers). TTMIK also has a stellar website (+ an app + YT channel) so there are lots of accessible ways to navigate!

📝 All in all, my language journey has added tremendous value to my daily life here, offering more connections for me to enjoy and explore.

💜 Bonus Tip: Take Korean lessons using @ktalk_live on IG, obsessed with them!

... Read moreWhen I first arrived in Korea, eager to embrace my new life, I quickly realized that knowing even a little Korean would make a huge difference. While I had picked up some basics beforehand, the real learning began once I was on the ground. Finding the right support was key to my success, and I quickly discovered that engaging a local tutor was a game-changer rather than just relying on self-study. Why a Local Tutor is a Must for Expats For anyone considering learning Korean after moving to Korea, I can't recommend a local tutor enough. It’s not just about grammar and vocabulary; it’s about understanding the nuances, the natural flow of conversation, and even cultural context. An experienced tutor can tailor lessons specifically to your needs, whether you're starting from scratch or looking to improve your conversational skills for daily interactions like ordering at coffee shops or navigating grocery stores. They can help you practice speaking the language in real-life scenarios, which is invaluable. Websites like Preply are fantastic for this, offering a wide range of online Korean tutors. What I loved most was the flexibility to choose someone who fit my learning style and budget, with various price ranges available. I looked for tutors with good reviews and who seemed genuinely passionate about teaching. Many of these online Korean tutors are native speakers who can provide immediate feedback and help you sound more natural. Don't be afraid to try a few trial lessons to find the perfect match! This personalized approach dramatically accelerated my learning and boosted my confidence. Beyond Formal Lessons: Immersion Strategies While formal lessons with a tutor are crucial, integrating Korean into your daily life is equally important. One of my favorite strategies was to consciously use new vocabulary and phrases whenever possible. Simple interactions, like asking for recommendations at a cafe or trying to read signs, become mini-lessons. Engaging with local culture, perhaps by understanding dialogues in K-pop concerts or Korean dramas, also offers a fun way to pick up new expressions and improve listening comprehension. Don't underestimate the power of language exchange partners either. Many expats and Koreans are looking to practice English or other languages, offering a reciprocal learning environment. This is a great way to make connections and friendships while actively speaking the language in a low-pressure setting. It complements your tutor's guidance by providing real-world practice. Leveraging Digital Resources for Continuous Learning Alongside my tutor, I heavily relied on structured resources. Talk to Me In Korean (TTMIK) textbooks were a lifesaver for me. Their systematic approach to grammar and their vast library of free online content, including podcasts and lessons on their website, made self-study much more manageable. They break down complex topics into digestible parts, which is perfect for learners at any stage. I also explored other apps and YouTube channels to supplement my studies, focusing on areas where I needed extra practice, like pronunciation or specific vocabulary sets. Ultimately, my Korean language journey has been incredibly rewarding. Being able to communicate has opened up so many doors, allowing me to form deeper connections and truly immerse myself in life here. If you're thinking about moving to Korea, or already here and struggling with the language, remember that consistency and varied learning methods, especially with the help of a dedicated tutor, will pave your path to fluency.
