Día De Los Muertos

Día de los muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a multi day holiday that includes the gathering of friends and family to pay respects to friends and family that passed away.

Celebrating Día de los muertos is honoring the deceased using marigold flowers (it's thought that the dead can only see the color orange).

Create an altar called an Ofrenda. This is used to celebrate and call home your loved ones. It is used as a welcome home for them. Decorate your Ofrenda with pictures of your loved ones, candles, sugar skulls, orange and yellow flowers, and food and drink. You can also add a piece of their clothing, or jewelry.

Some decorations also consist of bright colorful banners (these represent air) sugar skulls (represent death) and salt a symbol of purity. Some also add water to help quench the thirst of their loved ones from their journey back to visit the living.

Celebrating Días de los muertos creates a spiritual connection, strengthen family bonds, and honors the life of your loved one.

Celebrating Días de los muertos is typically a Mexican tradition, but anyone can celebrate it. It's a good tradition and Mexican traditions for the most part are encouraged to be celebrated. It helps be involved and learn a new culture. Sometimes the sugar skulls are referred to as a Calavera or Calavera De Azúcar.
