The Best Compliments I’ve Ever Received

At my uncle’s funeral, I was talking with family when a few things were said to me that honestly felt like some of the biggest compliments I’ve ever received.

One was:

“Grandma Erin is basically still 5-year-old Erin.”

And honestly… yes.

My heart is still joyful, hopeful, curious, and full of light no matter how many people or situations tried to harden it. I think keeping that childlike wonder in a world that constantly tries to crush it is a strength, not a weakness.

Another was:

“You have your mother’s blunt honesty… just all the time.”

That one made me laugh because it’s true. I’ve always believed people should know where they stand with me. If someone asks me a question, I answer honestly. In a world where so many people are comfortable lying, manipulating, or hiding behind masks, I think honesty takes courage. Sometimes parents don’t enjoy seeing their own traits amplified and mirrored back at them, but I’m thankful for that part of myself.

And lastly, hearing that I’m looking more and more like my mother meant more to me than anyone probably realized.

My mother was beautiful to me my entire life.

So maybe the greatest compliment is knowing that when people look at me, they might still see pieces of her living on. Not just in appearance, but in spirit, in strength, in determination. I hope when people miss her, they can look at me and see that part of her is still here — still chasing the dreams we both dreamed about but were too afraid to fully reach for before.

Maybe now I’m finally brave enough for both of us.

In my own life, I've realized how compliments that speak to who you really are — your core values and personality traits — can be more precious than surface-level flattery. For example, being told that my heart remains joyful and hopeful despite life’s challenges reminds me of the importance of maintaining a childlike sense of wonder in an often harsh world. It’s not just about staying innocent; it’s about nurturing resilience and light within, which helps me face adversity with optimism. Another compliment that always stays with me relates to honesty. In a society where people often hide their true feelings or mask their intentions, being straightforward can sometimes feel risky. But I've found that blunt honesty builds trust and clarity in relationships, even if it surprises or unsettles at times. Embracing this trait has allowed me to form deeper connections and has given me strength to stand firm in who I am. Additionally, being told I resemble my mother — not simply in appearance but in spirit and determination — is deeply affirming. It reminds me that the qualities we cherish in loved ones live on within us, shaping our dreams and motivating us to persevere. I believe when others see qualities of someone they’ve lost reflected in us, it creates a meaningful bond that transcends absence. From personal experience, I encourage everyone to embrace compliments that go beyond looks or achievements. Those that touch on your character and essence often reveal your true impact on others. Such compliments can empower you to be brave, hopeful, and authentic every day.
