hair OCD

Growing up around mostly girls, I’d constantly hear “Does my hair look greasy?!” when it honestly seemed totally normal. Like, ever notice how ppl hyperfixate on oiliness.

Is this a thing, like how different hair textures make us notice “flaws” others don’t? Or are we just conditioned to overanalyze? I mean, I’ve seen girls skip classes over “greasy roots” while their hair looked perfectly styled. IMO, it’s either a societal beauty standard hang-up or straight-up hair OCD. Thoughts?

... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? When you stare in the mirror, convinced your hair is a greasy mess, even though everyone else says it *looks fine*? I've been there so many times! It's easy to get caught in that cycle of worrying about every strand, sometimes feeling like it's a genuine 'hair OCD' situation. But what if there's more to it than just perception? What if our busy, stressful lives are actually playing a role in how our hair behaves? It turns out, those questions about stress causing greasy hair aren't just a coincidence – there's real science behind it! When we're stressed, our bodies release a hormone called cortisol. This 'stress hormone' can unfortunately send our sebaceous glands (those tiny glands on our scalp that produce oil) into overdrive. More cortisol can mean more sebum, leading to that all-too-familiar greasy feeling, even if you just washed your hair. So, yes, stress can absolutely make your hair greasier, making that worry about 'hair looking greasy' a very real concern for many of us. So, how can we fix it? Here are some practical tips I've picked up: Mindful Hair Care: First things first, let's talk about managing the grease itself. I've found that over-washing can sometimes strip the scalp and ironically make it produce more oil. Try spacing out your washes. On non-wash days, a good quality dry shampoo can be a lifesaver – but remember to use it sparingly and at the roots. Also, consider sulfate-free shampoos that are gentle on the scalp, and make sure you're rinsing thoroughly. Sometimes, product buildup can contribute to that heavy, greasy feeling even when your hair isn't actually oily. Stress Management: Since stress is a big culprit, tackling it head-on is crucial. This is easier said than done, I know! But even small changes can make a difference. I've started incorporating 10 minutes of meditation or deep breathing exercises into my morning routine, and it really helps set a calmer tone for the day. Regular exercise, getting enough sleep (this is huge!), and finding healthy outlets for stress like journaling or spending time in nature can significantly impact your overall well-being, and in turn, your scalp health. Diet and Hydration: What we put into our bodies also matters. I try to focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, and keep processed foods and excessive sugar to a minimum. Staying well-hydrated is also key for overall health, including your skin and scalp. Think of it as nourishing your body from the inside out! Hands Off!: This one might seem obvious, but I'm guilty of it too: try to touch your hair less! Every time you run your hands through your hair, you transfer oils from your fingertips to your strands, which can make it look greasier faster. It's a small habit, but it makes a difference. When to Seek Help: If you've tried these tips and are still battling excessive greasiness, or if your 'hair OCD' worries feel overwhelming, it might be worth chatting with a dermatologist or a doctor. Sometimes, underlying hormonal imbalances or other conditions can contribute to scalp oiliness, and they can offer personalized advice and solutions. It's totally normal to worry about our appearance, and hair is such a big part of that. But understanding that factors like stress can genuinely influence our hair's condition can shift our perspective. Instead of just overthinking and feeling frustrated, we can take proactive steps to manage both our stress and our scalp health. Remember, your hair probably does look fine to others, but taking care of it and yourself will make you feel even better!

For myself it’s because I’m insecure. I used to have incredibly oily hair when I was younger and kids in middle school and high school would take note. Even now I’m hypervigilant in maintaining my appearance.
